I'm not sure if I believe that there are 85 infants in the hospitals in TX with it, considering that some people have accused the reporters of flat out lying. Hopefully, we will eventually get some raw data from these hospitals to show how many infant hospitalizations there are. I haven't come across such a thing yet.

Deaths from coronavirus – even the deaths “with” coronavirus rather than deaths “from” coronavirus – are down more than 90 percent since the peak in April. The decline in deaths continues. That means we are closer to the “herd immunity” that will finally kill this virus. Yet Governor Abbott and others across the country see this as a reason to lock the country back down.

The numbers of covid cases have increased due to CDC changing how a case is registered. It started as a case was confirmed by a positive test. Now, "probable" cases are being considered cases and up to 12 people who have been in contact with a probable case can be registered as a case. It is dishonest that this is not being reported when the spikes in cases are reported. There have been other cases of dishonesty from the media and others. I'm just not really sure, due to that, what can be trusted.

The thing is that these posts don't really add up when you removes liberty talk and similar parts of the story. How the country is getting to the herd immunity if the spike is fake news ? Herd immunity means that at least 80% of the country got the virus and now they are more resistant to it. But how is that possible if there is no spike since it is basically made up story ? The story fundamentally doesn't work.



Therefore if you are confused this is how the science story generally goes. So far only about 1.3% of US population was positive to the virus and probably about 3-5% more got unreported. Therefore you are nowhere near heard immunity, because if you where basically everyone around you would have already gotten the virus and created anti-bodies (which btw. create resistance not immunity, we all have antibodies for flu or other diseases but we still aren't fully immune to them). However America evidently isn't anywhere near herd "immunity" because otherwise the death tool would completely dwarf the current numbers. Since old, sick and obese are pretty vulnerable and basically they would all need to be infected in this scenario. That hospital in Texas should be completely crawling with the virus if the herd immunity is coming to life. However trying to achieve herd immunity with this deadly virus is simply either insanity or ignorance.



While the current moderate reduction in deaths is probably due to two reasons. It is summer so everyone has better/stronger metabolism. While on the other hand people who are vulnerable know it and they keep their distance from pretty much everyone (you have a few of those around the forum). Therefore my honest advice is that you keep your distance from people as much as possible and make sure that those around you do the same. If not possible use a mask in that situation. Since the longer this takes the more social and economic mess there will be. Because preventing the new infections is what will actually end the pandemic and eventually restore the economy.

But people don't like being told what to do...even when it can help them and others. I've seen "You can't tell me what to do--I'm an American!". I don't get it.

If anyone is curious as to how this looks from the inside of a hospital, take a look at the current recommendations at my job for covid-19 inpatient adult treatment guidelines. The current recommendations include:

-conservative fluid management
-prone positioning in patients with mild to moderate hypoxia
-anticoagulation
-steroids

Other treatments may include:
-remdesivir
-trials with convalescent plasma

There's 21 drugs that are on a "w/out sufficient evidence to recommend" list. They're really throwing stuff at the wall. We're also starting to see patients for some post-infection problems. It doesn't have to kill for it to mess people up.

I think that is the most overlooked and underrated thing about the general attitudes in people regarding this virus. Post-viral illness are poorly understood and persistent sequela after like West Nile or H1N1, I don't even know if they track them. I just think ignoring or discounting post COVID issues is wrong and stupid but it will likely happen, at least in the US.
