I think my only issue about a travel ban from Europe at this point is that (1) the cat's already out of the bag and (2) they've made such a stink about border issues over the last three years that it's hard to detach this policy from all the other junk, even if it seems like a sensible precaution on its own. Out of all the things to be decisive on, they've wanted this anyway.

Pretty much the understanding here is that we are fending for ourselves and for the people around us, we can't really depend on people higher up the chain making decisions that will help us.

Did Congress close a few hours ago? That's what I'm hearing.

I think they should implement this as soon as possible. It'll be safer for everybody.

It's all anyone is talking about here now.

If they really have shut down Congress, they should really implement immediate telework -- it's what we've been geared to do for the last 5-6 years, barring the policy that just started in March. We totally can function like this for a month if we need to, aside from the small percentage of people who did not choose telework. (And they could just have those people report while gearing them for telework, since they already have been assigned the laptops.)

I mean, it's Systems, not customer interface, people in our career path are used to remote and virtual work.

So how does it end? When they develop a vaccine? How does it end before that time as long as one person is possibly infected in the world? Is everything going to shut down until the vaccine develops? It is scary for me on a personal level because my father would likely die from it if infected, being extremely frail and vulnerable to bad reactions to normal flu bugs.

I don't know. I am worried as well as my grandpa is one of the high risk people too.... ):

Let's hope that this is like other viruses and that people who have already been infected (and survived, of course) will develop immunity. If enough people develop this, we'll soon have 'herd immunity', which prevents the disease from spreading fast through the population. And, since the whole world is working on it, it's likely that we'll have a vaccine by next year. Stay safe for now!

I mean, that's great and all that as many people as possible, if they have the type of job that allows for it, can work from home, but in the meantime most people don't have that sort of job, and people will still need to get out and about for essential items (drug stores, places like target or walmart), groceries, gas, doctor appts, and will still be grabbing food and beverages in all of the retail establishments (though customer numbers will likely go down). But sure, I understand the concept of limiting interaction when and if possible. Just as long as folks are aware that it'll still be a potential petri dish in every other establishment that is still open with employees operating. (like, I suppose, it is and always has been for any other type of illness and chance of acquiring it when going out and about)

Like anything else in today’s world; when it blows over and everyone moves on to being outraged over something said by a celebrety on Twitter.

I do hope your Father stays okay. Before my Grandfather died last June, he too was very susceptible to things like this. If anyone had a cold, they weren’t allowed to visit.

Iwjsh people would stop spreading false information based on assumption. ‘Stay away from people with compromised immune systems! You’ll kill them!”

Nah, bitch. Corona works by turning you immune system against you and attacking your body two-fold.

So, I guess that means you weak healthy people should stay away from ME. Wouldn’t want to accidentally kill you, ya frail bitches!

I don’t mean that. Do you have any idea how infuriating it is to cheat death more times than you can count and have a bunch if feeble nerds who freak the fuck out at the very idea of ever having to be in a hospital try to coddle and patronize you? Ya-not into it. Fuck right off.

The media are really geniuses in formatting. First they say "Don't panic, everything will be ok". However after that they continue for 40 minutes naming everything that is going wrong, everything that is getting canceled and between that they count the dead from around the world.

People in the USA are finally starting to take this seriously. I think even if the gov't fucks up royally, we can at least count on most people to start limiting their public excursions, limiting contact with others, washing hands, etc. Schools are now closing in my county.

That said, I feel this is all too little too late. They should have started doing all of this at least a month ago, limiting travel only to emergency or essential, shutting down public events, closing schools, etc. Had they done all of this a while back, they may have actually limited the impact. I'd have closed everything down until end of April. Sure, the economy might take a big hit, but that might be nothing compared to the consequences of letting this get out of hand.

It sucks it takes it happening in people's own states for them to start realizing how serious this is. I admit I wasn't super worried about it until recently. Although even now I'm not trying to worry too much, because if I get it I'm probably fucked. The best I can do is continue minimizing my contact with others.

Holy shit, what if this killed Pence and Trump? Pelosi is next in line, but she herself is no spring chicken. So who's next, Chuck Grassley? Also not a young guy. Then we're on to the cabinet.

Obviously the likelihood of all of them dying or being incapacitated at once or in rapid succession is pretty low, but still something worth considering.

Well if the virus kills all remaining candidates that are elderly and crashes the economy that in a way would be kinda Shakespearean end of the saga.

They’ve banned all public events with over $250 pple in WA as well as shut down all schools.

Genius. Not those kids will be running around in public, possibly unsupervised, unless of course every parent stays home as well. Which, again, is how society shuts down.

Yes, but if you don't want people to freak out you can do evening news that aren't just about a single topic, which has "the end of the world" vibe. Especially since 80% of the facts really don't have a useful purpose.

I was being sarcastic.

I'm okay. I'm from Lombardy, the region with the most cases and where the lockdown started, before being extended to the rest of the country. We're under lockdown, though it's looser than the one adopted in China (no militaries, just the police asking to certificate the reason why you're moving around during routine checks, such as when they stop you to check if you have a license to drive). Just today, most shops have been closed, except for the most essencial ones.
The numbers are terrifying. Sadly, the government acted too late. Now, hospitals are struggling. It's hard to find enough places in the ICU for everyone, but our hospitals are making it, somehow. Our healthcare system is currently under extremely heavy stress. We're gonna need to wait for two weeks in order to know if the measures taken have been effective.

What could have happened is that someone from Germany brought the disease in here, when direct flights from China were stopped (direct flights for China land in Rome. The main outbreak has been in Lombardy, not far from Milan, where flights from Germany, usually used as connecting flights from China, land.)
We have underextimated the virus, and it quickly spread. We don't know if the main source has been a guy who was infected and went to the ER two times before the doctors realied it was Corona (This guy hadn't been in China recently, so the protocols didn't provide for him to be tested).
When they realized it was cv, initially a few cities have been put under lockdown. As of today, more than two weeks later, those cities have zero new infected people, but it had already started to spread.

Cytokine storms are pretty rare with covid and not the main thing you should be scared of. I'm not a doctor, so I don't want to take a position about prevention, but the best measure is STAYING THE FUCK AT HOME (what the italian government has been asking us to do lately), herbs do little to nothing. Unless the other countries start to compulsively test people, you don't know the actual number of infections.

Stuff I think you should know, since people here ignore them:
We've just had doctors debunking people who advocated for vitamin C to help your immune system. It doesn't.
Surgical masks protect other people from you, not you from other people.

This being said, I dunno. If you have any questions, just ask me.

Just glad you are doing as well as can be expected. I still can't get over no toilet paper anywhere here. I don't need any but entirely empty areas at Walmart are wild.

Yeast packets and flour too. This tells me people are attempting to bake their own bread if/when they end up sequestered in the house. :happy0065:

Since all regular sports are over for the foreseeable future, I say bring on the e sports and my favorite ESPN show that's only barely about sports.

Dude, Walmart in VA looked like a mad max movie today

People with carts literally towering with groceries, some 6-7 feet high, people speed walking out of the store to cars, little old ladies in masks bumping each other out of the way in cramped aisles
