i was really optimistic about humanity getting through this back in 2020. Now, I'm pretty jaded and disillusioned by the way we've handled it, and a part of me thinks we deserve extinction.
I sometimes feel guilty that when I see an overlap between really mean people like white supremacists and pandemic deniers, a part of me hopes COVID-19 kills off a bunch of mean people, but also realize that's not very nice. I still pause for that morbid moment and wonder what the world looks like after 2025,but then remember how many innocent people will die and feel horrified and messed up by all of it.

This will be bad day for US. Already 72 800 reported new cases while California, Texas and Florida still didn't even start reporting (half of the states is still like that).

I was optimistic exactly like you, remember?
But now I am pretty much the same way! I am utterly disappointed... I've also noted a bunch of things lately... such as that people with sadistic personality disorder are normally happy or that people with narcissitic disorder are indeed more wealthy and perhaps even healthy in physical terms and all than average as well, as well as there are more psychopaths as a CEO in a proportion something like 3-5x than average. Trump should be a psychopath and Bolsonaro is a 100% one. And taking into account that Stalin or North Korea is bad either, it doesn't feel like the problem is capitalism, I think the real problem is humanity! =(.

Pritzer's press secretary, to reporter who complains about masks and then asks if schools will close again, pointing out that it takes a toll on students' mental health: "You want to keep the schools open? Then stop complaining about masks."

The reporter: "Show me the studies."

Although the press secretary really should have said they'd give her a list later, instead of saying "Google it." And ideally Pritzer's rant at the end would have continued that sentiment: "You want to keep schools open? Stop spreading misinformation."

Good on the press secretary. It’s a journalist’s job to research this stuff. They are clearly in the wrong line of work.

But I thought Bernie and Trump voters were the same! Toxic extremists bad for the country! (Not directed at you.... just that I've heard others say this and I think these stats show why it's a load of rubbish.)

Exactly. It's hard to believe it's remotely possible such a thing could be asked for in good faith, and that the intention wasn't solely to get an inflammatory sound bite of a Democratic governor "not providing an answer when asked about the studies proving their claims." Anyone who strays from extreme right propaganda media has already been inundated by studies done by career professionals (with the kind of track records that would have lended their work credibility before this moronic "anyone can be an instant expert" zeitgeist) for over a year now, proving that masks cut down on transmission. To us, this moron might as well have been asking "where are the studies proving the Earth is round?" A beyond stupid question, and it's understandable the PS would answer, "Google it." Because it's stunning that anyone earning a living as a reporter wouldn't have even tried to fill in SOME of the blanks about a topic themselves. So she's either (assuming good faith) a wildly incompetent and stupid reporter or (bad faith) a propaganda artist.

It's completely by design, in that exchange, that all anti-vax/anti-mask crackpots are likely to see is evasiveness and confirmation that no one in that room can provide proof.

I like the guy way more than I thought I would.

Yeah. If I've been disappointed even once by him so far, I can't remember it. He didn't flinch, even once, at Trump's bullying - especially when it came to the pandemic - in spite of Illinois having a lot of Trump supporters. It's difficult not to respect that.

Nake fews

I’m sure they exist but I’ve suspected estimates of the numbers of Bernie bros turned Trumpers are overstated.

Anecdotally, I have yet to meet one. I thought my uncle was one but turns out he didn’t vote for Trump, he just likes to talk shit about corporate Democrats. In fact, most of the Bernie “bros” I’ve met in person have been women and POCs and not a one spoke highly of Trump, despite this lingering narrative that Bernie bros are mostly white guys who abandoned the left for Trump in 2016

More Hillary people voted for McCain in 2008 than Bernie voters went for Trump. Somehow you never heard about that, though. Funny how that happens.

Good news: BioNTech (the "brains" behind the Pfizer vaccine ;)) have announced they will likely have their data on under 12 year olds ready in a few weeks and present it to the European Medicines Agency in september for the admission process. That means young children might be able to get vaccinated this fall. That's very good news if you are a parent worried about school closures.

Our daughter is in first grade and we so want her first year of formal education to be as normal as possible. If vaccinating the young-ins makes that more likely, bring it on!

I just read that (here in Germany) between 0.3 and 1.7% of children infected with SARS-COV-2 have to be hospitalized. That means that nationwide up to 180.000 kids could end up in hospital if schools are kept open without adequate protection.

The bottom line is that even doctors who are studying this topic don't know what these antibody readings actually say about your immunity, says Haidar of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who is running a study on coronavirus antibody response in immunocompromised individuals.

"We don't know what the optimal antibody level is that correlates with protection," he says.

For example, Haidar says it's clear that immunocompromised patients may not have as robust an immune response to the vaccine, and that looking for the presence of antibody levels can hint at their level of protection. But even this can be misleading — because some research suggests that detectable antibodies from those patients still "may not be able to prevent infection as well as antibodies from people who are otherwise healthy."

This video is interesting. I can't verify the accuracy of it, but share it for thought and discussion. This doctor is proposing in the end of the video that the lack of aspirating the needle for COVID-19 vaccination could be connected to the negative reactions to vaccine. Basically, medical personnel are taught to pull back slightly on the needle at the site of injection to be sure they are not injecting its contents directly into a blood vessel, but into the muscular tissue. He is proposing that the percentage of times the vaccine is accidentally injected directly into the vascular system are correlated with negative side effects. I googled information on aspirating needles and it is not typically done for vaccinations and many needles are now manufactured without the ability to draw back and aspirate them. It is a hotly debated topic in the medical field and I'm not proposing one side as fact, but I do think it is a helpful consideration and worthy of continued research.
