More than 16 million Britons are now required to stay at home as a lockdown came into force Sunday in London and southeast England, part of Boris Johnson’s attempt to control a fast-spreading new strain of the coronavirus.

The measures ban household mixing in the capital and the southeast, and restrict socializing to just Christmas Day across the rest of England. Residents across the country were told to keep to their local areas.

Johnson had originally planned to ease pandemic rules for five days during the holiday, but made an abrupt change of tack after emergency talks on the virus mutation with his top officials. Emerging scientific evidence suggests the new variant -- which currently appears virtually unique to the U.K. -- can spread significantly more quickly than previous strains in circulation and is behind a huge surge in infections in recent days.

I wondered if there was any connection with the vaccine, and I don't know, but I did see this article with this statement,

I guess it's good to slowly and steadily keep stocking up and being ready for what could come next. We may have another hard winter next year. Wow, this is hardcore. At least we have better leadership in the U.S. At least that.

With newer and tough measures in place we are finally falling in active and new cases. What had to be done since otherwise the healthcare system probably wouldn't make it.

Plus they are indeed going with the banning of travel between the regions in order to lower the families from getting together. Since grandma and grandpa are probably somewhere around the country side and they should remain undisturbed.

This was my point among 3 other threads in 2019: There is no real meritocracy, capitalism today is not up to the standards in almost every country. Only Norse countries are somewhat close.
Major computer/console games are dozens of times fairer than real life. A professional Chess player is very likely quite smart and dedicated, for example. That is definitely not the case for many super rich.

And more: These people believing they are invincible just because money or prestige make them appear so are stupid and on a real meritocracy would probably end up in moderate poverty.

The most shocking thing to me about any of this is not that a large chunk of Americans have made wearing masks a political issues, or taken quarantine as an assault on their freedoms. The shocking thing to me is that so many of the assholes in power are dumb enough to believe exactly to believe as you stated. I would have been inclined to think they were merely exploiting the situation for their political gain while privately taking precautions. Awful, but within the realm of what I could conceive.

Nope, these fuckers are dumb enough to believe their own bullshit. In other words, they are dumber than even I imagined, and it's not like I believed this was a meritocratic country before that.
