So the lockdown was entirely about not overwhelming hospitals, and we were assured most people would get Covid, aka "flattening the curve". We succeeded in not overehelming hospitals. And we have people with antibodies now. So why are the lockdowns not over yet? It was never about preventing infection, because there is no cure or vaccines yet. So lockdown is essentially pointless right now.

Now, the article Jonny posted about the sudden decrease in certain illnesses. It is NOT the result of people not going to work/cleaner air/less stress. Its entirely the result of people staying home. Going from an active lifestyle, to a sendintary one is very bad for your health. Alcohol sales skyrocketed during the lock downs. When this shit is over, we will not only see an increase in obesity, alcoholism, heart disease. But we will begin to see what deaths the poverty this pointlessly excessive lockdown brought on those who lost their jobs. Poverty is going to kill far more people in the long run because of this, than Covid ever did.

That's the point.

Col. Mustard really did it, in the library, with a candlestick. Call the National Enquirer.

Putin's coronavirus crisis deepens with fatal hospital fire and spokesman's diagnosis - CNN

The grim news from St. Petersburg was quickly overshadowed by the disclosure that Dmitry Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin's longtime spokesperson, had been hospitalized with coronavirus.
Peskov told Russian state news agency TASS that the last time he had seen the President in person was "over a month ago," but the news follows the hospitalization of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin for coronavirus and is likely to intensify concerns about Putin's own health.

I'm not keen on eating in packed restaurants in the best of times. The possibility of catching a serious illness makes the prospect even more unappealing.

Me either. But this was never about people's freedom to eat in a restaurant or get their hair cut or nails done. It's about THEIR right to eat in a restaurant or get their hair cut or their nails done. I hope that everyone is taking notice of exactly what the right wants and who they want it for. It's definitely not me or you or any of the people.

‘Partisan Tribalism’ Dominates in Poll of Americans’ Virus Views

Democrats and Republicans see the coronavirus threat in starkly different terms, with Democrats more likely to have been personally affected by the pandemic and Republicans more confident of a return to normalcy.

Democrats’ pessimism seems to be rooted in a different coronavirus experience. They’re more likely to know someone who has gotten the coronavirus -- 47% compared to 39% for independents and 37% for Republicans. And Democrats are more likely to be working from home, losing income, getting groceries delivered, and struggling to pay bills.

And they’re much more worried about getting the virus themselves: 60% of Democrats are “very concerned,” compared with 38% for independents and 25% for Republicans.

Those differences can be partly explained by geography. The virus has hit densely populated urban centers, which tend to be Democratic, especially hard. And with some exceptions, like Ohio and Maryland, Republican governors have generally been quicker to ease restrictions on economic activity.

But the poll also shows different degrees of optimism between the two parties, with 79% of Republicans confident the country will limit the effects of the outbreak within the next few weeks. Just 30% of Democrats are similarly confident.

Republicans are also much more optimistic about a post-coronavirus world: 80% of Republicans are very hopeful that their lives will return to normal, compared with 53% for Democrats.

I remember attempting to spell out the consequences of this correlation before partisanship wrecked any cohesive unifying american strategy, in this very thread, over a month ago. Just because you can see the train coming doesn't mean you can always get out of the way though. Most of the people on the right who are itching to reopen (and actually are, in some areas), who are generally less affected by the virus and carry less of a burden regarding it, would have been much more likely to help the dense leftist areas of the country if people on the left and the media had handled this situation more like adults, instead of petulant children taking the usual partisan pot-shots at low hanging fruit.

A few observations on my part:

1. More red voters voted for the first 2 options than the last 2 options, while with independents this is even more of a case. Therefore there is no real partisanship in this. Most people don't want people around them handled to the virus. That is simply the most natural reaction possible.

2. Conservatives in general live in more remote areas and therefore geography matters. How in my book you forgot one thing. Which is that the virus that is coming from abroad will first show itself in large cities that have active airports. What means that in the case that the "stay at home" wasn't pushed at all surely more of the virus would get to rural areas. What then means that rural people would probably see the problem "somewhat" differently.

1. Those numbers are percentages, not counts. What it shows is that republicans are almost perfectly split and balanced between all 4 options, while democrats skew drastically towards being concerned. So yes, it does show partisan differences.
2. Rural communities have passive social distancing built into them, so there is an automatic damper. No public transportation. Everyone has their own vehicles. Everyone is well used to infrequent shopping and infrequent attendance of public spaces. Combine that with active social distancing and the benefit of a head start, and I highly doubt the two will be statistically comparable.

I guess the mature way of taking this is to go protest without a mask and say the virus is a media hoax then :rofl1:.

It seems independents are, in average, worried too.

Because the very trustworthy media told you that those idiots represent republicans?

In my country the people who does these kind of things are the equivalent of republicans in your country, and who told me that were people around me, media and whatsapp messages.

Ohio was the first in the country to shut down schools with only 5 cases in the state. Those liberal governors and their hysteria. Oh, wait. . .

Ohio is reopening. This just proves how competent republican governors can be- unlike mine in Michigan, or in New York- where state policy was to send old people with covid19 back to their nursing homes and not even bother sanitizing the wide open for use subway through most of March and April.

As with anything else, my freedom to do something ends where it becomes harmful to someone else.
