An interview with a doctor in New York City:

Ingraham: So how beneficial is hydroxychloroquine? My next guest says Doctors are already using this treatment in the United States successfully. Joining me now is Dr. William Grace, oncologist with Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC. Dr. Grace, great to see you tonight. How big of a deal would approving chloroquine for the coronavirus be.

Dr: Well it's . . . , everybody is using it now off-label. We have a surge of coronavirus-19 patients in ... throughout the metropolitan area of New York. The problem is these patients are coming in quite sick and when they get to a very difficult respiratory status...doctors are using hydroxychloroquine with or without a drug called zithromax or azithromicin and that's showing tremendous activity and we have not had a death in our hospital. We have probably close to a 100 patients and we have not had any deaths. But I've talked to many of my colleagues at other hospitals in New York and they also are using hydroxychloroquine. Although, the supplies are running down so any kind of supplements to those supplies would be much appreciated.

We're starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

I like it. "Boomer remover" is kind of edgy, given the life-and-death reality attached to it. Also, I like the dismissiveness of "remover," as in stain remover. It suggests that boomers are a nuisance that need to be "removed." It's got a little bit of venom to it.

Much better than "Okay, boomer," which was merely smart aleck-y and kind of cringeworthy.

Of course, the oldest boomer is only 74 and most boomers (like me) are much younger, which means that really it's the tail end of the previous generation getting hit hardest by the coronavirus. The Silent Generation I guess. But that's a technicality. Gen Z folks think of all old people as "boomers."

Anyway, edgy is good. I like morbid humor. This boomer approves.

It’s a really simple plot. Exponential growth based on historical trends, with the growth factor reduced in proportion to the percentage of the population still susceptible to infection. It isn’t meant to actually predict what will happen as much as illustrate exponential growth and changes in trends.

Yes, but however this really ends there it is going to be brave new world out there once this is over.
While the irony is that this is kinda speeding up UBI, sealed borders, medicare for all, wall street bailouts ... everyone should get what they always wanted but it simply doesn't have "the right feeling". Context really is a bitch.

USA confirmed cases soar. I have a bad feeling: USA could be the next Italy, if nothing changed significantly.

Geographically speaking, Europe and USA are both continental, which allows the citizens travel via three transportation medium: land, sea, and air. On land, Citizen can travel by their own own vehicle: car & motorcycle, could be even on foot if lived near the border, and public transportation such as train, buses. In addition, Citizen can also choose to travel using aviation, or even ship. It is different with archipelagic countries, where to go to a place may be reachable only by plane or ship but not by any land transportation since the places are in different islands separated by sea. I guess this could be how the corona virus spread very quickly in both US and Europe.

It's much easier to control entry and to track the sources of infection on islands.

I had to pick up meds this morning, and i overheard the pharm tech saying that it looks likely that in a couple of days they'll put in a curfew for my mom's county (where I'm riding out the pandemic) and then probably a couple days after that go into full lock down. I don't know how true this is but wouldn't surprise me

Heard one of best explanations on how coronavirus invades cells and how to stop it on a Los Angeles Times program on Spectrum TV last night. The virus enters the cell through a protein called the Ace 2 receptor, so the strategies for stopping the virus include:

1) adding a bunch of similar chemicals that bind the receptor, preventing the virus from entering the cell.
2) adding chemicals that stick to the virus so it can't go through the receptor, and
3) vaccines (1 year away),
4) something that breaks up the virus envelope.

I'm guessing the hydroxychloroquine, Z-pak combo is #4.

All things considered, if i get the virus and my immune system reacts strongly to it, I am extremely likely to die. I have hypertension that averages around 140/100 and I have had mild chest pains for about a year. Havent been to a doctor about the latter yet.

If I do die, at least I will be able to take solace that I won't have to suffer through climate change. I just hope the end isn't physically painful.

I'll be making a document to direct what to do with my few possessions if I pass and do deem who can and cannot interact or direct what to do with me when I am gone.

An Effective Treatment Strategy for Cytokine Storm in Severe Influenza

This technique would save millions of lives if it ever got implemented, but that's not going to happen on a wide scale. On average, it takes 14 years for 50% of doctors to implement a new procedure.

A nonpharmacologic treatment for cytokine storm currently used in Europe is based on a novel blood purification technology. CytoSorb therapy from CytoSorbents Corp. (Monmouth Junction, NJ) uses biocompatible, porous polymer beads in a hemoperfusion cartridge to adsorb mid-sized inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and toxins from the blood. Whole blood is repeatedly pumped out of the body and through the sorbent cartridge using standard dialysis machines, with purified blood recirculated back to the patient.

Instead of stopping the cytokine storm through inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or nsaids, this techniques filters out the cytokines in the blood (some sort of chromatography/ion-exchange technology) and then pumps the blood back in.

CytoSorb blood purification was started at 250 mL/min for six hours per day, for a total of seven days. Kidney function improved and dialysis was discontinued one day after CytoSorb treatment. Rapid improvements in hemodynamic stability were also observed, and the patient was weaned off all vasopressors within three days of treatment. The patient’s IL-6 levels were reduced from 8076 pg/mL before treatment to 94 pg/mL after treatment. The patient went on to fully recover.

Wow!! This method would have application well beyond just coronavirus or viral pneumonia.

The most prominent virologist here in Germany, who also advises the government, said he doesn't consider hydroxychloroquine to be of much use in this situation.
