They played the entire album of Good News for People Who Love Bad News. Some of them I thought were played really well, some of them I thought were better on the album. It was a treat to see this with a bunch of other millennials who knew the words. Seeing how these songs are mostly downbeat, I can imagine how being here in concert and singing along was as cathartic for the others as it was for me. It was a release for me to sing these words while remembering all the crap I've dealt with in my life and all the crap that we know is out there in the world. I would say this was another magical experience, and it was a pleasure to witness. My favorite take from the album might have been The View.
After intermission, they played songs from other albums. They included two of my favorites which both merge a heightened sense of bleakness and desperation with nautical themes: The Whale Song, and King Rat. The rendition of King Rat easily surpassed the album. It thundered with an intensity and depth that was reminiscent of being at the bottom of the ocean, on the abyssal plains where no light penetrates. Listening to that version, it was as though we have all sunk so deep they have truly hit bottom. This fits the song, which includes lyrics like "I took all that I desired, even crooks have to pay the rent," and "And you know, you know, you know it all went wrong."
And for those who don't know, I used the whale captain below as my avatar for many years, before I got stuck on this bird theme.
This made me want to go to so much more concerts.
