I'm just curious how people happened upon their favorite artists.

The role of nostalgia is tied up in this association for me. I find me listening to things sometimes because they evoke earlier instances of me listening to those things. For instance, for me, the album Tango in the Night by Fleetwood Mac was constantly playing in my house when I was 3 or 4 years old, on a record player, no less, so that has a powerful positive association.

There is also the question of discovering new music. I was watching the VMA on MTV with my sister and there was one band present who I actually liked. That band was the White Stripes. I suppose what appealed to me about it was the raw, primal emotion behind; it seemed more genuine to me and less about putting on an act. (That was how I perceived it at the time).

On cable, there was the music service called Music Choice, which still exists. It was basically a series of television channels that acted as radio stations, with a different channel for each genre. There with factoids about the band band at the bottom of the screen, and they had many genres. It was the only good way I knew of to discover new music, since the M in MTV had become all but symbolic at that point.

I was visiting extended family in Chicago, and we were in a mall, and I went to the Hot Topic (no joke). It seemed like interesting people hung out in there, so I thought it would be worth a visit. I noticed they had CDs and wanted to by an album, but the staff member suggested I buy this album by Modest Mouse instead. I'm glad I did because that Good News For People Who Love Bad News album fit me like a glove. I knew the single, Float On, and I was interested in the emotional timbre of it. I would describe it now as the voice of a guy who has struggled with some shit. He sounds as though he's trying to feel better and find a better side of life.

Anyway, this album is one of my favorites, and I would have picked something else that wouldn't have matched me as well if I had not listed to the suggestions of someone else.

Normally, I think I am relatively open about listening to the input of others, and this is an example of that. Sometimes I would definitely say I am too open, but in this case that was the right choice.
