Yes but now that she's been sentenced, it's easier to negotiate/prisoner swap - Jason Rezaian's book is an especially good read if you're interested. His story was a bit different but in the end his release took like a year and a half of secret talks. She also IS a political poisoner, just as he was. I love how people are all up on their high horse about the cbd but it's not about that. When Western athletes sign contracts to play in Russia, the generally include clauses for things like this. The Russians didn't uphold her contract. How absolutely shocking that a country that lies all the time, lied again.

She was charged with smuggling and possessing narcotics. She wasn't charged with trafficking with intent to distribute or sell, which would be seen as far different. And probably helps with respect to a prisoner swap and release.

Thanks, I saw that mentioned last night -- that now that the case was quickly resolved, they can switch over to the diplomatic route to get her out. If it had dragged out, she'd just be stuck in limbo.

And you won't hear anything public from the USG and I hope nothing from her wife or allies. That will only slow or stop things. But it would be an excellent time to for NBA players to stand in solidarity with their WNBA sisters. It would also be a perfect time for Brandon to decriminalize all drugs in the US at the federal level. Cannabis at the very least.

In all seriousness, there has always been a strong link between religious fundamentalism (defined as belief in an "inerrant set of religious teachings") and authoritarianism. Even for the ones that claim to be atheist/agnostic - they still abide by the orders of the religion.

I think the R's are still clutching that "Washington outsider/not a politician" idea that worked to elect Trump. When people realized government isn't a business and can't be run like one, you need experience and experienced people to effectively govern, etc that entire ruse was pointless. But they keep doing it. Cool. Sounds like a great plan.
