The US version of Utopia is alright, I dont think it is as good or as scary as the UK one but I think switching up the conspiracy to being the actions of private, old money, corporations and corporate mavericks rather than scheming civil servants, secret agents and government bureaucracy is more in keeping with the US or contemporary aesthetic, like I mean its much more in line with the bizarre Bill Gates conspiracies (John Cusack's character I think is meant to be Gates).

I do not think the assassins are as creepy or convincing as in the UK one, I dont even think the protagonists are as well cast either. The violence isnt as real or torture as shocking and scary. Its a bit more hollywood but at least it raises awareness about weaponized viruses, complicity and conspiracy surrounding population growth or contraction.

Of course they rejected it. All of their borders are with EU and plenty of people are working across the borders, so there would be a mess if this passed. In practice Switzerland is in EU but due to historic and some other reasons this was never fully formalized.

People who are used to believing in their beliefs versus external fact checking don't have problems selectively believing or not believing in things that have no personal relevance for them... How many Sundays did I spend with people (and other days of the week) who see it as a sign of virtue to believe out of pure faith?

Basically as long as there is no faceslap from reality, they will believe what they want to believe. And sometimes even if there is one, it simply gets reworked into something that justifies the belief anyway.

More Federal Employees Subject to Mandatory Payroll Tax Deferral than Originally Anticipated

The Trump administration’s explanation of which federal employees would be affected by the payroll tax deferral was “incomplete and misleading which caused many workers to learn this week they were unexpectedly subjected to the deferral,” said the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) in a statement on Friday.

“Only after NTEU inquired about the discrepancy did the administration revise its instructions on how employees can calculate whether their payroll taxes would be temporarily suspended,” NTEU wrote. “As a result, more employees will be subject to the deferral than originally anticipated.”

So basically all this "money in our pocket" by exec order is really just a personal loan against our future paychecks, a loan we never requested and didn't want. I'm not sure what non-fed companies are doing it, since it is opt-in, but fedgov is being forced to do it via OPM.

We were told that anyone who made over the cutoff (gross) on their bi-weekly paycheck would be exempt and not have to deal with the headache. but of COURSE, this would be incorrect because since when did they ever relay information correctly or even understand what information to relay? Today I find out via an e-mail (not through my work, but my private account from a mailing list I am on) that actually you have to make more than the cutoff (gross) AFTER they take out your medical insurance premium and some other deductions to be considered exempt. So it's going to be close for me; I guess I will see what my paycheck this coming Friday looks like, to tell me whether or not they are taking out the payroll taxes. So now I might have to make sure I am banking all that money I might be getting back so I can pay it back in 2021.

This is a complete stupid waste that just creates more headaches for taxpayers (since the debt will likely not be excused and is meanwhile robbing from Social Security funds, so it really should not be excused), that no one ask for, that the administration dumped on folks to try to win support over the summer, and then it was not even understood or explained properly by the administrators of the changes so that people could prepare.

This is so typical -- kind of like your five-year-old making you breakfast in bed, except totally just to get something they want from you, and meanwhile you've got to clean up the kitchen AND make yourself breakfast after because what they gave you wasn't edible.
