US flu season is underway, as cases surge in some areas and vaccinations lag

... Thirteen states reported high or very high levels of flu-like illness last week, about double from the week before. One is Tennessee, where a sickness spike is hitting the Nashville area, said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases expert at Vanderbilt University.

“Flu has been increasing, but just this last week has exploded,” Schaffner said. He noted that in a local clinic that serves as an indicator of illness trends, as many as a quarter of the patients have flu symptoms.

Louisiana is another early hot spot.

“Just this week is really that turning point where people are out because of the flu," said Dr. Catherine O’Neal, an infectious diseases doctor at the largest private hospital in the state, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. "You hear parents saying, ‘I can’t come to work because of the flu’ and ‘Where can I get a flu test?’”...

Shocking. I wonder what other states are involved...

When times are tough, people make folk heroes.
Especially when the system fails them.

Party City is Going Out of Business

I think the noteworthy part is simply how they seemingly blindsided their employee base (especially at corporate) by providing positive messaging until the shutdown and then just booted them without benefits or severance.

Wow, yeah, that bites.

What was with them telling them the trip to the vendors was cancelled because of "security concerns" due to the fact that Party City apparently stopped paying it's suppliers? Very bizarre. Is the implication was that they were taking thigs without paying them, and therefore the vendors were irate?

I use ground news to track how ads for news sources skew for me. I use an ad blocker for most of my old machines. But I like to get a guage on what my user profile might be occasionally.

I don't know if Google has been skewing ads for people in the US. I used get what I judge as balanced news feeds through ads. Both my wife and I have started to see a skew rightward on the political ads being served.

So I use Duck Duck Go as a browser on most of my machines so I don't see much in the way of ads. I don't have a FB account or a Twitter account anymore. I'm not looking at news of any kind on my computers. As soon as I open MS Edge, I get Fox News ads, ads for right wing apparel, gun accessories and Black Rifle Coffee (right wing company), Prager U Kids (JFC) and this place I've never heard of;

Obviously they know targeted ads to conservatives equals $$ but this is like super targeted grift according to the site. Finance subscribers, political subscribers, survivalist subscribers, health subscribers. I'm absolutely sure this will get worse until things become unusable.

I have You Tube Premium which at $14/mo is incredible. Because those ads are off the rails.

youtube has lots of ads that I'm certain are just government watch lists.

YouTube is easily the worst. I've been getting frustrated just trying to watch the 5-8 channels i might regularly watch, some of the ads are obnoxious in addition to being a forced 30-60 seconds. I might as well be watching regular TV again.

Although I barely ever post anything there nowadays, FB is also becoming obnoxious, not necessarily in ads themselves but in adding/shoving crap in my feed. EACH DAY I maybe run through my feed 4-5 times, and each time I am removing a good 15+ pages I never followed or read that they are simply adding to my feed and now I have to clear them. I feel like I'm spending more time unfollowing things than reading. I've also looked in my Settings trying to modify this somehow but for the life of me cannot find a way to stop the deluge.
