My take is that Tolkien saw himself as a humble academic, who was at his heart introverted, a man in mourning for the scourging of the shire of the world in which he lived. I think he appreciated his fans, but was a bit dazzled by the light of fame, he wanted to retreat from it, but still felt a sense of obligation to his inner Bilbo and hospitality was an obligation he took seriously.

The Scouring of the Shire, i think must have been a lot of how Tolkien felt coming home after WWI and seeing how it had gotten to home while he was away.
I'll never forget the moment I first read Gandalf died, years before the movies came out.

George R. R. Martin, was really inspired by that feeling.
