Clearly, there is great overlap in skillsets between the two professions.

It’s kind of dumb to tell a 55 year old miner to learn to code, but there is really no good reason younger people going into that profession should not learn another skill to fall back on, because even if the coal mining industry isn’t killed, automation will eventually make human miners obsolete. This isn’t a bad thing, considering the health risks of breathing coal dust and working underground. There’s a youtubers named turd flinging monkey who is a libertarian and frequently makes that argument about automation and technology being a good thing. You should check him out. Like it or not, automation will eventually allow dangerous jobs like truck driving to phase out. Coding is not hard to learn. I know a few people who have gone to school for it and believe me, none of them are geniuses. There’s many jobs like data entry as well which really don’t take much more than an average IQ
