So I have shit memory except for music, which is where probably 90% of my brain activity is concentrated on. And there's something weird happening, I'd like to know what cognitive function is associated with it.
Basically I'm very good at listening to a melody, or maybe even beat or timbre and automatically associating it with something else. It doesn't have to be a song I know well, if I heard it once, it will be registered in my mental library and I will be able to associate every new song (or part of song whatever) to it.
For example, it works like this:
I was listening to Spoek Mathambo for the first time yesterday. There was a small melody. My brain made a big ping, recognizing it automatically as something I'd heard before. I was also sure it was distorted and had a different tempo. Then I searched for it, and my brain told me "French" but it also gave me conflicting information "funk" and I was confused. Then it said "Gnarls Barkley" and I went for the first song I thought was right, and it was right. But there was something missing. Then my brain said "Louise Attaque" and again I found the song immediately.
Spoek Mathambo, Louise Attaque and Gnarls Barkley are not my favorite artists. I've only listened to them once or twice. But the association was made and it was automatic.
Second example, was listening to A Tribe Called Quest. Again, my brain pinged real hard. First images were "western music"; "sad"; "reflective". Then it said "woman". Out on a limb I had an intuition for Bran Van 3000. Went on Youtube, and it was the correct song.
These two bands, again, are not my favorite bands and I didn't know the songs well.
Also, I listen to at least 5 new artists everyday, so it's not like my mental music library consists of 10 artists, it's actually pretty huge.
What is it? Si? Ne? Fi? Ni even? Thank you so much.
