LOL. He backpaddled almost immediately. After severe criticism from within his own party he tweeted that, obviously, the party resolution on not cooperating with the AfD , not even on a municipal level, was still valid and claimed to never have said otherwise (which is bullshit, he was testing the waters).German center-right leader mulls cooperation with far right at municipal level
There you go Herring.
I told you about a year ago that the guy will do it.

In any case, his remarks were explicitely about municipal level, where party politics play much less of a role and it's more about "Do we build a traffic light at that crossing?" or "What building could be used for the new youth center?". The CDU in the East is already doing this in a few villages, as far as I know, simply because in some places the AfD is so big that you can't just ignore them if the administration is to keep running. It's an issue of local party groups in small towns and villages occasionally acting against national level party resolutions, mainly in the East.
FYI, I don't think politicians abandoning any concept of principle is based on their ideology (left or right). They will all whore themselves out for power....center right + far right governing and from the start I had this impression that he will not be able to resits the temptation.

I'm getting to witness it first hand right now in Canada, where our minority left wing party (the Liberals) have formed a coalition with the far left party (New Democrats)to prevent another election. The damage they are doing (i.e. massive deficits) will be felt for generations to come, but they don't care. Holding on to power trumps good governance in every politician's mind.
