Europe swings right — and reshapes the EU

Italy has won migration. It’s aiming for Europe next

As I was saying for years: The problem solving in Europe is too slow and thus things will start to change eventually. Thus you should be prepared for the the right wing EU.
In other words it seems that war in Ukraine will be what will spill the glass.

The trend will inevitably have implications for the EU, which will elect a new European Parliament in 2024 and then reshuffle its Brussels leadership. Already, progressives are expressing anxiety about the reshaped right, while the powerful center-right European People’s Party (EPP) is eyeing team-up possibilities with the far-right to push its agenda.

The writing is on the wall and everyone can see it. The right is uniting and that has never happened in this form or volume. So the odds are that the nature of EU will change. This probably isn't a complete autocratic shift but it will nudge social issues to the right. It will also rise military spending and probably push for more ignoring on international rules, as well as more domestic production. Plus immigration levels will probably plummet.

Tend to agree with you here.

Also, the left needs to realize how unpopular out of control migration is, and start developing policies to control it. The 'open arms' approach is driving people to the far right, as those parties are the only ones that want to crack down on it. Unfortunately, those far right types come with a lot of other authoritarian baggage.

Climate refugees are only going to get worse people are going to need places to go and the places who welcome them when they come will be better off than those who reject them. People remember who helps them at their most desperate, and who rejected them. Most of America better wake up to the fact that they are one day to depend on the good graces of other people in the world and they should pray to their living god that the people they end up needing to go to are better souls than some of than they.
Time is running out and we're all on this sinking school bus together.

True, plus it is worth noting that in most of Europe right or even far right aren't against welfare state of some kind. Therefore the left can't really do much in counter-attack in that area. So the odds are that the left could suffer in this whole situation. While globalization was going smoothly all of this made some sense. However since that fall apart on multiple fronts the left and most centrists have a ideological problem. Especially since the right wing surges are basically driven by workers of host countries that objectively got screwed since the start of the century. So all of this are basically tectonic shifts for the continent, since the status quo is broken and it probably isn't coming back. So we will just have to wait and see what will be the new normal.

People have been migrating since the beginning of humans on earth. The right simply stokes fear of the "other". The actual reason voters are against migrant/immigrants is because neoliberal policies for a large chunk of the last century has failed their voters in every aspect of their lives. Therefore, fear and paranoia, combined with xenophobia (also stoked by the right) and economic dystopia, caused by centrist/moderate neolibs are a winning strategy for the right. Except the right are also ultranationalist, far right authoritarian pigs and act accordingly. So what would people like? Limiting migration and imagining that will save their shitty low paying job and hopefully save what little they have? Or, you know, watch the book bans, extrajudicial murders and arrests and oppression of minority groups and think well, I don't like them but they're going to help me economically....

As far as climate refugees go, at least in the US, it's not even states up north that need to get ready. Appalachia - Western NC, Eastern TN, Eastern KY - all going to see movement to these areas. I know they are headed for places like Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Even the township I live in (which is in western Metro Detroit) is discussing climate migration and people moving here and how to plan for it. People can't stay in a place that has no water or is too hot to go outside or both.

This is all a done deal and there will be severe devastation down the road. There just isn't any reason to get scared over this anymore. As you know that I wrote quite a few posts on the topic around the forum but I am basically done with it. Since it is perfectly obvious how all of this is going to end in the big picture. For example just take a look at my last post. With all those new pipelines it means that they aren't even trying to fix it. What is more than enough to cause global fail in preventing the disaster. So enjoy your life, this is all a done deal at this point.
