By the way, ever seen Selelck in the film In And Out? It's great. The movie itself is kind of dated and meh though. He shoulda gotten an Oscar nomination for that role. Completely unlike any other role he's done. But he makes it work.

I've seen tom selleck in a lot of things, I didnt care much for in and out. It pretty much seemed to me the whole premise of that movie was Kevin Kine giving into peer pressure.

What do you think were his contributions? I'm not so sure that Palpatine returning wasn't him. Sure, he told Ian McDiarmid he died in ROTJ when filming Episode III, but at that time, he also said there would be no sequel movies, and that Star Wars was just the story of Anakin Skywalker. We know he wrote some scripts for sequels before Disney came on the scene, so he either changed his mind or was just misdirecting people.

I always thought that stuff in Episode III about him talking about creating life and "saving people from dying" seemed kind of weird, but it actually makes sense if it was laying the groundwork for him to come back later.

The line "he could save people from death, but not himself" is kind of goofy on the surface, but makes more sense if he actually did have the ability to resurrect himself from the dead.

There seemed to be a lot of debate last week over whether the Palpatine in the film is a clone of Darth Sidious (so maybe that Emperor we all knew as Palpatine was just one of many clones over centuries) or the real Palpatine from RotJ. I think it is landing as the latter.... except we very clearly saw that Death Star completely blow up in the film and Palpatine as well.

it's such a bad retcon for various reasons. This is what the failure of imagination is -- if you wanted Palpatine to survive, you should be taking as much as you can from what we saw and finding a way through. Maybe Palpatine's spirit could inhabit another living form until it gained enough power. Maybe evil things he created would linger after his demise and drive events in this film. There are lots of possibilities. I just am so confused as to how SLOPPY all this world-building and plotting was. I have seen one article headline called something like, "ROS is what happened when a film franchise just gives up" and I'm feeling it hard.

I think it is landing as the latter.... except we very clearly saw that Death Star completely blow up in the film and Palpatine as well.

it's such a bad retcon for various reasons. This is what the failure of imagination is -- if you wanted Palpatine to survive, you should be taking as much as you can from what we saw and finding a way through. Maybe Palpatine's spirit could inhabit another living form until it gained enough power. Maybe evil things he created would linger after his demise and drive events in this film. There are lots of possibilities. I just am so confused as to how SLOPPY all this world-building and plotting was. I have seen one article headline called something like, "ROS is what happened when a film franchise just gives up" and I'm feeling it hard.

Palpy should've stayed dead. But I would have liked if Snoke were revealed to be one of his inquisitors or perhaps one of the weird imperial dignitaries briefly seen in his throne room in Jedi. Always wondered about those guys..

He was arguably the best part of the film, but that movie in general is stressful for me. Like you can practically feel kevin Kline's character just throw his hands up and be like fuck I'll be whatever you want just make this nonsense stop!

I know it's blasphemy, but I'd love to see the sequel trilogy they'd have made if they'd followed the outline he wrote for 7-9. It would probably be shit but I'm still curious.

I would, too. They would have dealt a lot with midichlorians. I'm completely serious.

Frankly, I never had much of a problem with the little buggers, but I don't think it would have gone over well.

I can kind of draw the conclusion that it had something to do with the teachings of Darth Plagueis (not just saying that because of the memes), but they should have given us more than just two tossed off lines that sort of hint at that for the people who actually remember that.

So here's a question for you Extended Universe / Legacy folks... Does Kylo and Rey compare at all to Luke's kids (or kid and niece/nephew or something) in the Timothy Zahn (?) books [I think they were in his] and how much? Just curious.

So more people are back to work today and I ended up hearing about SW from a few different people. On RT, the verified audience marker is at 86% (for people who gave the film 3.5/5 or higher), but only at 78% (and double the viewers) for the entire viewing pool.

At work, one of my analysts said she enjoyed the energy of it and could overlook a lot of the irrationality because she's only a casual SW person at best but says if she knew more, she might have disliked it. Her husband is more steeped in SW background knowledge and disliked it a lot.

Another analyst disliked it, and he took his two teenage kids -- one liked it, one disliked it.

Maybe this pool is shifted from mainstream demographics because we are systems analysts, we are professional logicians so to speak and also troubleshoot/validation systematic problems, which this film shows a large number of. it's just odd, it seems more a 50/50 split here and those who did like it acknowledge it had a number of issues but were only casual viewers so it could all be overlooked.

I thought the rule of two wasn't a hard rule but one the sith lords bent or played fast and loose with quite frequently. I mean Palpy had Inquisitors who were basically junior sith lords, one of whom I'm sure would've taken Vader's spot in the event Vader died. Then in EU there's a mention that Maul was Palpy's secret apprentice whilst Palpy was still serving Plagueis, though that's not been confirmed onscreen. Not too mention Tyrannus was training Ventriss and later Savage. Also Vader was secretly training Starkiller to be his own sith apprentice. And I'm pretty sure he wanted Luke to become his apprentice as well.

I think rule of two is something Bane created to help consolidate his power and limit sith order infighting, but it was never meant to be followed super-strictly.
