Over the past couple of months, I did some birthday baking for friends. Little rushed, but everyone was still happy.
As Gordon Ramsay would say for the first:
SUSHI CUPCAKES
The 2 trays in front are real sushi & soy sauce. The big tin tray in back & obviously the one on the plate w/lit candles are cake.
The cupcakes are white vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream. The seaweed wrap is brown Wilton chocolate fondant colored with a bit of Wilton Moss Green gel color/textured with some crinkled foil. The rice is made from Wilton white sprinkles. The salmon center is a strawberry Starburst candy, & the avocado center is just some green vanilla fonant. The ginger is a lemon starburst candy, rolled into thin bits/shaped. The wasabi is vanilla buttercream w/a little Wilton Kelly Green gel color. The large bowl of soy sauce is melted dark chocolate.
And the next:
COWABUNGAAAAAA
This was
EXTREMELY rushed, but everyone was still happy w/how it turned out, so
I should've done a square/rectangle cake, as my sewer ended up looking a bit too much like a well... oh well.
Chocolate cake, vanilla buttercream. Gray parts are vanilla fonant colored marble w/Wilton gel color. The pizza crust is vanilla/chocolate fondant mixed, red cookie icing, & yellow vanilla fondant for chz. Ooze/mutagen was leftover green cookie icing (crusted up in a way I didn't want). Nunchucks were chocolate fondant (wood bits) with metallic sprinkle accents, the chain was vanilla fondant sprayed w/Wilton silver food color spray. Michelangelo's head was actually made from some of the leftover seaweed chocolate fondant w/a tiny bit more green color added. His head is on a toothpick; his arm/hand holding up the manhole cover is fondant, built around a toothpick. Manhole cover is hardened white modeling chocolate, colored silver.
*I should note - fondant is kind of polarizing... there's apparently a whole subreddit dedicated to its hatred. The recipients of these cakes actually request it over just buttercream, or over modeling chocolate...
