To me it's rich coming from a guy whose incompetence and poor judgement helped give Trump the presidency in the first place. But I guess I'm supposed to ignore all that and feel sad for him because Trump fired him.
Yeah, I was gonna say it's partly due to Comey that we are even in this mess. He needs to just disappear, no one cares.

James Comey Says Joe Biden Should Consider Pardoning Donald Trump to Allow U.S. to Heal

Oh, fuck off. This is a terrible idea, and this dipshit is the last person I want to hear it from. I guess this deluded jackass actually thinks pardoning Nixon was a good idea that accomplished something other than enabling and encouraging future presidential criminal shenanigans.

I actually thought it was hilarious when Trump fired him. Super weird I was supposed to be horrified by that.

Yeah James Comey needs to go back to shutting the fuck up. This guy heavily tilted the scales in Trump's favor right before the election with his investigation of Hillary Clinton.

Why does healing have to include absolvement? It's only because it's someone representing their brand. They pulled the same crap with Nixon. Pardoning Trump would be one of the absolute worst things that could happen in terms of preserving and strengthening our Democracy going forward. I hate to be that guy but if a bunch of supporters for Obama or Clinton had stormed the Capitol and flown their campaign flags, all while people died in the process, do you really think the Right would give any shit about "healing" and letting this go unpunished?

I'm putting this very good read here because it's germane to the Biden administration, neoliberalism that brought about Trump and how to avoid another, more competent version.

Ripe for Fascism: A Post-Coup d’Trump Autopsy of American Democracy - CounterPunch.org

James Comey is certainly part of the problem. What he is saying is - please excuse a neoliberal populist like Trump so we can put more in office, more polite ones of course. Please please please.

The first reality is that we have to focus our energies on helping citizens discern fact from fiction. Trump’s behavior is unequivocally reckless, but his rhetoric would have been unsuccessful sans a significant population whose material decline, after 50 years of neoliberal policies, became susceptible to the fake news that permeates the internet.

Yes. Lets. It might help people that run around saying things like this...

It wasn't a "seige", and honestly using that kind of rhetoric is dangerous. It was a protest that got out of hand. They didn't even do that much damage. The BLM riots caused over 500m in damages, the capitol protest broke a few windows and doors. Even the news coverage of the "damage" is pretty pathetic. Almost everyone was unarmed. Why would you be okay with shooting unarmed civilians? Especially after the BLM riots.

Now it's "dangerous" coming from a person so radicalized and steeped in conspiracy and lies they can no longer ascertain up from down. They need help and a lot of it.

The news coverage that propelled Trump to the presidency and the right wing media are identical. I have never seen and will never see a right winger admit this. Because they would no longer have a faceless, vague "enemy" to blame for every failure of their belief. That's why "tech" is the new right wing enemy. Social media never stopped Trump or the right when they went after Obama, threatened journalists, amplified lie after lie after lie and crazy conspiracy theorists to household names. Only when Trump threatened to repeal 230 did they do anything. MSNBC and CNN have made huge "resistance" profits for years. Fox News, OANN, Newsmax too. All the same.

Oh and the property damage yet again. You know who cares about that? No one.

I think that would be the most divisive act possible. It would embolden Trump supporters and enrage those who rejected Trump. The world needs to stop revolving around Trump. He should be on trial with no cameras allowed and left to the justice system. Maybe one headline at conviction. That is the only way to heal. You have to reset the bone or it will heal crooked and cause a plethora of new problems.

Most neolibs and Republicans are still operating on the Ford pardon of Nixon school of logic. Much different scenario and just like not convicting Trump after impeachment, pardoning him will absolutely embolden him and the ones that come after that they'll never be held accountable for anything they do. This is also why the chuds that stormed the US Capitol are so shocked they're being arrested and charged. They never were in Michigan - not a single one. Why wouldn't that be the logical conclusion in DC?

I watched the ceremony ... which was on the most of the major channels.

However in the end I can only say that I hope that the new president truly understands the seriousness of the current situation. Which truly requires deeds and decisions instead of words. Because this truly has to be the start of completely new era.

Well, I don't think Ford should have pardoned Nixon. The institution of the presidency is not important enough that they should be exempt from the rule of law solely by the virtue of their office.

Jen Psaki to hold first WH briefing tonight. A qualified and competent person speaking - what will I do with myself?

My twenty-something kid texted that to me -- "Wow, Biden's press secretary looks like an actual human. And they're actually having a press conference!"

I laughed when I read this and then I thought for a second, suddenly realizing it isn't funny. There is a group of young people who haven't had the opportunity to watch "normal." I was pleased with Obama's Press Secretary, Josh Earnest. To go from Josh to the sheer lunacy that followed him would be like waking someone up in the middle of the night to throw a bucket of water in their face, then shout at them to go back to sleep.

Yup, thinking that too -- they have no real idea what "normal" was supposed to be. I've had to explain it to them during this time (where they all kind of came to voting age or were just barely able to vote in 2016). I've had to give them context for a great deal.

Van Jones on CNN just brought up the same thing we're talking about and I burst out laughing. Apparently, people are finding themselves blown away by a "normal" human being conducting a press conference and having a "real" functioning government.

When I was a kid we had an analogue phone. free cable television, played outside and no one stormed the capitol and the news was considered boring.
