A simple question to ask yourself :

How can clean water not be a basic human right?

The next question is what are we going to do about it?

I have ideas and suggestions based around them but first i would like other peoples input and interest.

edit:This is very poorly written.I do have a theory about how Carl Yung drove himself mad he was constantly talking to dick.MY agenda is so poorly hidden i am also a dick for the approach, i could tidy it up properly but that would be cheating on dick.

Clean water can't be a basic human right because nothing that obligates someone else to give you something can be a right.

Jeff, sure, that logic works in the caveman world but in the modern world if someone made the water dirty, they ought to clean it up.

No, it's simply true. I'm not talking about what people "ought" to do according to someone's personal values, I'm talking about basic human rights which was the subject brought up. By definition, a right cannot be something that denies someone else's rights. Therefore a right can never be something that obligates someone to do something for you.

There is a definition of human rights I came across in Legal Studies that summarises the essence of the principle "Human rights are the basic entitlements of all people, based on the virtue of their humanity".

In regards to clean water and a natural environment, these elements are necessary for human survival. However in the modern world with the emergence of ecocatastrophes because of excessive human activity, it becomes increasingly difficult to provide clean water in some parts of the world i.e developing nations. Nevertheless it is still an inherent right on many levels, based on sound reasoning.

It is certainly a problem when diseases or illnesses such as cholera become widespread due to poorly-kept water supplies. Therefore a functional society from a legal, logical, moral and social perspective, MUST provide clean water to the population.

How will they go about to bring that? Enforce stricter rules that prevent corporations from dumping chemicals and waste into waterways such as rivers that many communities depend on for day-to-day life.
Introducing filter systems and related technologies to agrarian socities is another solution as well, although the cost is high in the short-term for these governments, it will significantly improve the standard of living in these developing nations during the near and distant future.
