[SJ] SJs and gambling

So, tonight I learned that I fail at gambling. Putting my money into a flashing machine only to push a button only to have it go away forever just wasn't fun...

Is this perhaps an SJ practical thing? Or do some of you have a different take on this?

I don't know. The people I know that are the best at or are the most into gambling are SJs. I might like it more if I was better at it. I have no luck at all and so I end up bored/annoyed quickly.

Personally, I doubt there's much correlation with MBTI. People can get very different things out of gambling. Some are impulsive about it and others are very strategic. Some do it for the rush and others are more measured. Some focus on reading people's body language and others calculate odds.

Yeah, Si isn't big on taking pointless risks with a high probability of failure. About the only time SJs gamble is when the point is the game rather than the outcome. Small stake stuff usually. I'm not big on it myself, especially the type of gambling you're talking about. Never trust a casino that isn't on the verge of brankrupcy. Actually, don't trust them even then.

Actually, I was discussing this with my ENTP friend, a 7, probably. He said he would take the bet with a higher risk, but a greater reward. I said that I wouldn't do that, but it's also possible I don't use Ne enough.

The two people I know who are the most addicted to gambling are an ISTP and an ENFP, and I don't use the term "addicted" lightly. They have very little money, and whenever they can scratch some together, they're off to Atlantic City or some other gambling center to throw it away, instead of paying the bills.

The most skilled and serious gambler I know is an ESFJ. He's a tournament poker player. His wife also plays, but I don't know her type.

My opinion of slot machines is similar to [MENTION=19948]Showbread[/MENTION]'s. They're fine, but I don't get much out of dumping large amounts of money into a machine that is very unlikely to pay off. I also don't generally buy lottery tickets or bet on sports. If I enjoyed poker, I'd probably play that, whether money was involved or not.

That is what I prefer to see posted about any activity. It's not really a question of "would type 1234 do X, Y or Z?" but, rather, how would they do it? And why?

I don't like gambling, but I like card games that use incentive in your play-choices (i.e. gambling). As long as the amounts are small: for example, "loser buys lunch".

It has been awhile since I read Jung; but I’m relatively sure he was talking about stocks and business investments when it came to Ne Doms. Not pokie machines which probably hadn’t been invented then; given the state of electronic development. The difference being calculated risks and rewards versus extreme risks and astronomically small chance of reward.

As a philosophical pole of operation, extraverted intuition is a driving force of the gamble.

I will say, I did not intend to isolate the phenomenon explicitly down to slots.

I don't find the fun in it either. Because there's no mental strategy involved in things like slot machines, it's just dull. I can't learn from it.

Card games are a different story. Even then, though, I don't bother. I don't have spare money to throw into a past time like that.

I think this is more of a J/strong J thing since this kinds of individuals dislike inefficiency and muddy logic.

I play poker with a lot of SJs.

They are hard-core grinders at the poker table as if rebuys didn't exist. They are typically fast decision-makers so I assume they just stick with basic fundamentals/principles of play. They are not big when it comes to gambling on flush or straight draws so top pair pushes them out with just a value bet.

If they're still betting at the turn and river, they almost always have something good like 2 pair, 3 of a kind, straight, or flush....

SJ are not odds on favorite to overbet with one pair in the later rounds. If they are all-in, forget it, they've got the nuts. On the flipside, if they have 3 of a kind with a straight or flush out there on the board...or a flush with a full house on the board....SJs will be the first to fold to a big bet even by a maniac SP (sp-laster) whose been playing super loose and off-the-rails....so easiest to bluff
