A man who was president of the Harvard Law Review, taught constitutional law in Chicago, is going to pardon someone who stole classified information upon becoming POTUS. You're high.

You're right. Dumb to expect someone who taught constitutional law to care about the Bill Of Rights. But like I said, I didn't expect him to do something like that anyway. Which is why I didn't vote for him in the primary.

I'm glad you feel good knowing that you live somewhere that people who whistleblow about illegal spying on American citizens are not pardoned, but Roger Stone is. That level of confidence in our institutions isn't something I've had since the 90s, when I was in elementary school.

I don't want to get into a fight here (and actually agree with both you and [MENTION=19700]Tactical Turtleneck[/MENTION] on many issues), but...

- explicit distrust of democratic institutions
- little value attributed to state of law
- mistrust of professional media
- strong dislike of anything perceived as "elites" (especially in contrast to a rather uniform "the people")
- strongly anti-interventionist
- general cynicism and hyper-skepticism
- often aggressive and bitter undertone

... are all characteristics of your typical Trump supporter

My parents do the same kinds of reversals, and coincidentally, get a lot of info from the same sources as Jaguar. I don't think it's a coincidence.

I get that, though. Perhaps I'm just annoyed that I'm suddenly supposed to trust the institutions that have been failing us for the past 4 years (well, longer really, but whose counting?). I remember the same thing happening with Obama and then people acted shocked with Trump swooped in. To me it shows a lack of thinking about the future and how the political landscape might change. I'm rather frustrated that the country is dominated by a narrow partisanship based on personalities rather than issues that discourages that kind of thinking. I don't think that reflects well on the country at all. Like, nobody arguing with me has really answered or responded to my concerns about what comes after Biden AT ALL. (Need I point out that 2015 and 2016, nobody could entertain the possibility that Trump would win)To me, that's very telling.

I'm angry because I think I'm butting up against a lot of misplaced faith and confidence in things that really aren't that solid, especially because we've seen that they aren't that solid, so I don't think people have an excuse any more. It's even worse because Democrats are supposed to be the party of "smart people" so the utter lack of critical thinking is very grating to me.

It's actually hilarious to me that the response to my concerns is that I shouldn't worry about such things and trust the institutions. Amazing that people are still coming up with that in 2021; it's even better coming from people who claim to value skepticism and so forth.

Also, you have to keep in mind that when I was in high school, the heroic press was spreading stories about Iraqi WMDs. That's something they forgot to mention during the past four years when they were casting themselves as the guardians of truth and democracy.

From my POV, people have very good reasons not to trust these institutions. Unfortunately, what they do with that mistrust is often very foolish.

Coincidentally, nobody who insists that I should trust these institutions has anything to say when I remind them about how they've failed in the past. I don't mean the distant past. I mean my lifetime. It doesn't help that those same people seem to often be the same ones who were trusting those institutions back then (I can verify that in the case of my Boomer liberal parents). To me everything points out that the resistance to what I'm saying is nothing more than a refusal to learn from past mistakes. Which always turns out well.

I recently posted "go big or go home." He has no idea what I was actually referring to and he never even asked. He has a sore spot ever since I told him years ago he wanted to live for free. Years ago. Could it be I hit a nerve and he doesn't like it? Hell, he's still blaming everyone under the sun for not being able to get a decent job when he got out of college. "They did this to me!" Who the hell is the "they"? Let me guess . . . the so-called elites. It's this type of nonsense that attracts disgruntled people to populists in politics and holds them spellbound. Blame "the elite" for everything that bothers you so you never have to be held to account for anything in your life. That's pretty convenient.

If he doesn't like what your position is, his tactic is to misrepresent your position or make up statements you never even said. "Jag told me to kill myself! How dare he!" Some gullible person might come along in a thread and actually believe him because he's screaming it. It would take a smart individual to not only identify his pattern, but also know the pattern has been repeating for years. If I had a dog, he'd claim I have a cat. If I posted I can't stand broccoli, he'd claim I started a company to sell broccoli since I love the taste. I wish all this were hyperbole, but unfortunately it's not.
