Offensive pictorials

Are any of you ever offended by anything at all? Well, some people are. Some people find Playboy and Hustler to be offensive. That's why they used to put those magazines in the back of the display shelves, so as not to offend people and to keep youngster's eyes pure. I guess they then started just using covers on those magazines so that the pictorial was hidden from view completely. Tell me fellow weirdos, what do you think of that. Do you agree that offensive material, even if it isn't offensive to you personally, but might be to others, should be hidden from view for the above reasons?

Not sure what this thread is about, you're talking about how certain establishemnts push pornography into the backdrop, and I think that it all depends on the type of establishemnt, obviously, there is not one single type of store that sells magazines, and some sell magazines that are exclusively porn.

No. It's fine if adult mags have something on the cover or come sealed in plastic that obscures the cover. Most of the magazines I subscribe to come this way and none of them are offensive, unless Bon Appetit and Cook's Illustrated count. If they're not covered and you don't like it, don't look. You don't like what's on TV, change the channel. Why do these things have to be done for you? Are you unable to avert your eyes on your own?

Are any of you ever offended by anything at all?

Of course I'm offended. I'm offended by the religious right. I'm offended that an organization like ISIS exists in this world. I'm offended that there is a single person in prison after the subprime mortgage crisis. I'm offended that our president is defending the fucking Saudis when he should be defending the American people. Magazine, TV/movie content, books..... those are way down on my offensive list.

OK, so what about children. They wander through the stores with their parents and look at magazine displays just like you do. There, just above eye level is a naked woman with her breasts displayed along with whatever else they chose to show. Those magazines are covered for a reason.
Why do these things have to be done for you? Are you unable to avert your eyes on your own?
Well, Ceecee, it's like this. When you're looking at the magazines displayed for purchase, you browse. You look for a magazine you might want to buy. You look all through the display. It has nothing to do with averting your eyes. You see it because it's there. You can avert your eyes after that, but you've already seen it. Unless you're looking for a specific magazine and know which section it's in, you'll see all of them.

Yeah, I'm offended by other things too. I'm offended by you.

What I hate is CENSORSHIP.

Especially in music.

You can tell what the fuck they just said, just let them say it! Especially in rap, wow. What's the fucking point when the only thing that's edited is the u sound in fuck. You can hear the ffff, you can hear the ccckkkkk. We know what was just said!

It's hilarious that in Soundgarden's Outshined there's a line, "The grass is always greener where the dogs are shitting", only in the album insert the lyric is spelled shedding. They really were about to get an explicit album rating for that one word.

So in live performances Chris uses extra emphasis that dogs SHIT.

Are you speaking of Playboy? They do not have nudity anymore in their magazines. Which is why you may have seen this one on a shelf with no cover?

Not Playboy specifically, I meant any of the "male masturbation magazines". And yeah, I know that Playboy made that change.

I'm offended that magazines are still around. Wake up, people. Print is dead.

Well, if it's a store that sells only pornographic shit, then yeah, I don't think there's any reason to hide the covers of those magazines.

Anyway, there was a point I wanted to make in this thread, but wanted to see what other people thought about covering offensive magazines. My point is that if they do put magazines that might be offensive to some people, in the back of the displays so that the images are obscured, or use covers over the actual magazine covers, well, how do they determine what's offensive and what isn't?

There are many different lines that should not be crossed. However, the lines constantly move and it's difficult to predict where they will be. I more expect people to be mindful on a small scale. It's unrealistic to expect it to be adhered on a macroscale, and even more difficult to control. The best way to manage it is to educate the masses.

I don't find Playboy or Hustler offensive, but I do find Maxim offensive for actually talking down to women, and trying to cure feminists. I don't like tabloids in general - I try to avoid most mainstream grocery stores but I live in a major city, and CVS is really helpful and convenient sometimes, so I see this SHIT mocking the weight of stars, their mental health, questioning the paternity of Kim Kardashians baby, at least once a month, whether it's razors or cat food or wine, it's like goddam me for not going to Whole Foods, Sprouts, REI or Lush for everything I need (or making it at home from food products)...I really hate major corporations and what they sell. The last time I was in a Walmart I cursed my mom for hours, told her not to shop at Walmart anymore and laid in bed and posted on Typology Central like a good neurotic.

What about female masturbation? How do you feel about Germaine Greers Beautiful Boy?
