The catalog at the entrance of the library no longer exists, instead of the card catalogue we have the random access memory of the computer.
But although the catalogue no longer exists, we still continue to think categorically.
And at the same time random access memory is teaching us to think in a different way. Random access memory is teaching us to think associatively.
It was print that gave us the phrase, building to a sentence, building to a paragraph, building to a chapter, building to a book, that gave us the habit of mind of thinking categorically.
But the book has been relegated to the content of random access memory, and associative thinking is starting to blossom.
Associative thinking is not written in phrases, sentences and paragraphs, but is written in lines, which may or may not contain phrases, sentences and paragraphs.
Categorical thinking is logical. Categorical thinking is linear and sequential. Categorical thinking is hierarchic. Categorical thinking is true and accurate. Categorical thinking disenchants.
Associative thinking is metaphoric. Associative thinking is resonant. Associative thinking is poetic. Associative thinking seeks the moment of epiphany. Associative thinking re-enchants.
