This was intended more as an artsy song than a poem when I first wrote it... It seems to function reasonably well as either though, so here it goes anyway...

The stars of my life shine in criss-cross illusion:
Not like the one guide-light that wearies my day
And burns with less stellar light certain contusion
On the sun-wary skin of a night lover’s clay.

As though star-bright city lights, seen from a distance
Reflected such brilliance on dozing men’s minds
To open enlightenment’s shutters by instance
Of nearness, enclosed by their zodiac signs.

Until, moving closer, the mystery sunders
Among neon-dead portals to smog-shrouded day
Lives twitch in blank motion, releasing by numbers
The snack-feasted refuse of a world in decay.

The beacon we saw through the mists of our childhood
Was only portending to the adult world’s lies–
So now we would rather fly back to the never-wood,
Bemoaning lost innocence with tears in our eyes:

Like eyes of a lover whose gaze holds in binding
Fresh dewdrops of passion and desperate for more
Till somehow these raptures are lost in the finding
And no knowledge rivals what love was before.

For once there was magic – and fairies, strange monsters!
Brave knights rescued damsels from the dragons of old
For a smile – but they had only stories, and constants
Of ignorance, filth, and men warring for gold.

But hope lives on, dreaming in glimpses of heaven
Of greater worlds out there – not sighted in vain!
Through pinholes undraping the light of creation
Where beauty, beseeching by distance, remains.
