Most of the Harry Potter films. (Let's just skip Fantastic Beasts stuff.)

Do you think Two Towers and Return of the King were better than Fellowship?

Fellowship is the only film I ever rewatch... so no, not really.... at least in terms of capturing the essence of the book.

Not better but I think Halloween II and III are as good as the first.

Indeed. Goldfinger, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the Dalton Bonds all jump to mind.

Amen to Toy Story II and III. I’d have to rewatch IV though

Mad Max: Fury Road

I think all of the Mad Max sequels are better than the original. Even Thunderdome. The original is good, but it's basically a generic vigilante revenge film. It doesn't even feel all that apocalyptic either.

This is a series where basically each film is a remake of the previous film, so they kind of improved on the formula everytime. A lot of people bash Thunderdome but I think it's superb. Though my personal favorites are Fury Road and Road Warrior.

Yeah Mad Max 1 just felt like Australian Punisher.

Road Warrior and beyond almost felt like different franchises

I always rationalized that Mad Max 1 isn't really set in the actual apocalypse, but right before the collapse of society and civilization. So wthe civilization that remains in the first movie has reverted to a sort of old west state of semi-lawlessness. Then Road Warrior is a couple years after the collapse, and Thunderdome looks about 10 to 20 years after the collapse, because they've made Mel Gibson look kind of grey and aged in it, and also people in that film seem to treat the pre-apocalypse/collapse like some distant memory. I'm not entirely sure if Fury Road fits into the Gibson timeline, but if so, it seems like it would have to be some time between Road Warrior and Thunderdome. Though he has his interceptor in Fury Road, despite it being blown up in Road Warrior. So I'm not sure if he rebuilt it or found a new one, or if it's a case that we just have to treat these films more like loose, mythological retellings of a popular hero, where sometimes details just get jumbled around a bit. In some tellings he has the interceptor, in some he doesn't, in some he looks more like Tom Hardy, etc.

Yeah, weirdly this came up in our gaming group last week where people were bashing Thunderdome once he leaves Thunderdone. I don't think I've actually watched the film in its entirety, so I guess I will at some point -- I just am real familiar with the theme song, as a child of the 70-80's.

EJCC and I watched Mad Max a ways back, basically there were a few sequences I remember liking but I was also indifferent to a lot.

I already mentioned Friday the 13th Part 4, but I'd add part 2 and 3. I find part 1 a little overrated, and it also really lags with some slow pacing, for example an entire scene that shows Alice slowly brewing a pot of coffee. I get they were going for a slow buildup of suspense, but it doesn't always work as well as that sort of thing did in prior slashers like Texas Chainsaw and Halloween, or the Italian giallos. 2-4 really improved on part 1 and made a true art out of slasher movies. Sean S Cunningham was always better as a producer of horror films than as a director. He understood the business side of it, how to market, but I think he was average, at best, at the craft of directing--this really shows if you look into the making of the first film. He came up with a title before they even had a story or concept in mind, and he spent time marketing and raising funds based solely on his ability to persuade people that he was going to make the scariest film ever.

I guess maybe it feels like it becomes a different movie after he leaves Thunderdome. A lot of people seem to dislike the parts with the kids but they never bothered me. They helped humanize Max a bit. And the final chase sequence is at least as good as The Road Warrior's, though not as good as Fury Road. fun trivia, the actor portraying Jedediah the pilot is the same actor who portrayed the gyro captain in Road Warrior, Bruce Spence. George Miller likes to use the same actors recast as different people, for instance Toe Cutter and Immortan Joe are the same actor.

I like to crank that theme song. I usually have it on a playlist alongside stuff like songs from the karate kid movies and labyrinth.

Well the movie is called Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, not Mad Max Hangs out with Tina Turner and Master Blaster at Thunderdome. In my memory I just substitute the kids for kittens and it doesnt annoy.

Yeah, I knew the bit about Immortan Joe. I think I had recognized the deal about Bruce Spence even if I didn't see The Road Warrior in full (I'm pretty sure I caught bits of it on network TV years ago). He played the Trainman in The Matrix Revolutions too. He gets around, he's got that tall gangly look. I just looked him up on IMDB and see he was an alien in Dark City and even the Mouth of Sauron in the extended edition of LotR.
