Do you think life is better believing in a healthy religion or not?

I got a brochure from the local JWs in my mailbox today. I threw it away.

Everyone worships something.

Most people's hearts are unknown to themselves.

This sounds familiar.

Everyone has a god. Be it allah or woman or knowledge.

Well I can't force myself to believe in something I don't believe in. And I don't think I'm any worse off for it.

I dont think religion involves forcing yourself to believe in something that you don't believe in, at least my religion doesnt, how very odd.

I think my life would be better with religion, well more like believing in the afterlife cause I don't want to die. But yeah I'm not really faithful, and need proof or at least a good reason to believe in stuff. When I try to rationalize religion, I can make cases for god not being real and god being real, so i'm just an agnostic person.

How afraid are you of dying? Why?

If not wanting to die is the question, what does belief change about that? You can believe in an afterlife and be wrong, or believe in no afterlife and be wrong for all we know.

Because I like existing, there's probably some instinctual part of the fear too. I guess I also fear not being able to do all the things I want/need. I also don't want to leave Earth or the people I like behind. I also love looking to the future, and a death kinda prevents me from doing that.

Fair enough, but if you don't believe it, that means you are convinced that there is one. Belief doesn't change reality, but it does change what you think reality is, and that's all fear cares about. I will say that I guess I have some duel belief where I simultaneous believe that there is an afterlife and that there isn't one. Idk I guess the belief that there isn't one is dominant since it just replays in the back of my head constantly.

We weren't made to die.

It would if you didn't believe in it in the first place, but of course you are not forcing yourself. It's great that there are people who truly believe in their religion. I can't say they're wrong and I'm right, and neither can they, but since I'm not a believer, I'd have to force myself to be religious.

I think religion is good for the species in general. For better or for worse, it can push us to attempt things that mere logic would strongly advise against. Terrible things, but also great things.

I don't know what you mean by a healthy religion. I've never encountered one.

I don't want to be someone without some belief.
Why?

I've been reading into Christianity.
Let me guess. You live in a country where Christianity is the predominant religion.

From my experience, people who don't have religion turn to divorce because it's always an option for them.
No, they get divorced because they don't get along. I prefer seeing that to seeing someone stay in an unhappy marriage because "God" told them to.

They'd stay even if they don't want to because they made a promise to someone.
What's so great about that?

I find any religion with too many exclusions of people who think differently to be a turn off... who would want to believe in a god that sounds like their judgmental grandma? not me... anything that divides instead of unites people is not a good thing... and anything that separates off those who aren't "our kind of people" only lead to alienation and hate in the end

trying to fit into a religion that doesn't click with you is like trying to be in a relationship with someone who you have no romantic attraction to... sure, they may be a great person and good looking and a really good friend, but if there isn't that spark of romance there you'll end up killing a part of yourself trying to make it work

organized religions are fascinating, but they just don't click with me and if your god damns me for it then I could make a few kind suggestions as to where he can stick his holy book

and this thread illustrates well the negative impacts that religion can have
