Most recent movie I saw was Harmony Korine's Julian Donkey-Boy, I think. It was pretty good, thought the ending was a bit predictable.

Just watched Chinatown this weekend. Noir isn't usually my genre of choice, but I think this movie highlights its appeal very much, besides being pretty awesome in itself.

Still, I expected more of it would be set in Chinatown. I feel swindled.

I love Chinatown.

Fun fact: during the part when Gittes sees Evelyn with a younger girl inside her house, I guessed she was her daughter, while my dad thought she was her sister. The twist proved both of us right.

I guess I'd have been more shocked if I hadn't seen a similar twist in Almodóvar's Volver, though...

I'm currently sort-of watching Beast of Yucca Flats. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054673/ I wouldn't go so far as to call it the worst movie I've ever watched . . . Guinea Pig Flowers of Flesh and Blood may possibly take the cake there as I was slightly traumatized by that beauty. *ugh* It really is bad though. Why am I watching this? OH YEAH because there are moments in this film that are just so horrible they are hilarious.

Megan Is Missing

This film was tedious and even if I hadn't wasted 4.99$ -sans tax- on it, I still would've considered it a waste of my time. Many supposed horror fanatics raved about how disturbing it was on Tumblr of all places, so I should have known it'd be nothing of the sort. 0/10

Yeah, don't pay attention to Tumblr. Or anyone on there. They're all furries & photo-whores, most of them.

I'm really not much into horror movies, but the theatre has been running a late night Halloween movie fest, so I've decided to watch a couple. I was hoping to get all scared and stuff, but that didn't happen. The first movie was Poltergeist, and while I enjoyed it, the parts I liked the most were the little family moments and the touches of humour.

Then I saw The Shining for the first time. It was a very beautiful movie, and it's neat to see Jack do his thing. But I guess it didn't really connect with me. It didn't help that there were people who would laugh behind me everytime Jack's character would make a funny face or say something overtly misogynistic, which was all of the time, pretty much. Duvall was just a little too silly. The most frightening part for me was seeing the Scatman drive on icy highways, talk about real terror.

Today I watched Raging Bull. It is the true story about a middleweight ephebophile who beats men unconscious or into submission for prize money. Other plot elements include Robert De Niro's character's deep-seated insecurities about everything. Many consider the film to be one of the greatest ever, and I could probably agree with that.

I actually went to the theater to see Paranormal Activity 3 tonight.

minor spoilers:

1. The theater was not very packed, but it was still almost all teens... and I don't understand why when anything "scary" happened, all the girls would laugh and giggle. It kind of makes the movie pointless; if I wanted a comedy, I would have gone to see 50/50.

2. The movie had gotten decent reviews despite being same-old... but I actually found it too much same-old and not really as good as either of the other two.

3. The first ten minutes of the movie overdid the shaky-cam bit (you can let it bobble a little and still get the point across, but I was actually getting nauseated, it was hard to focus on anything). It did stick with the motif at least of having the video be part of the plot.

4. There were a few creepy little scenes. The worst was the bathroom, which is funny since you see nothing; close to that were the scenes in the kitchen. There was a scene or two that was duplicated from other movies (you'll recognize the basic gist), which would have been terrifying here but not after seeing the other two movies.

5. The ending was far too much like The Last Exorcism, and I did not find it compelling. In fact, it was a let-down in some ways. That's the same problem we typically have with prequels of any sort -- we already know the end, and often the end was more compelling than the beginning, and unless you can nail that story so it lives up to the ending, it's almost not worth doing.

I watched PA 2 earlier in the week. It was interesting since it was a prequel and a sequel in one. It was different enough to create a few more scares, at least. And also an incredibly sleazy move by the hubby... but this is a morality play and people eventually get what's coming to them.

There was an interesting trailer for "The Devil Within," at least, though. It's probably garbage, that's how this stuff seems to work (sigh), but the trailer was a little unsettling at least. who knows?

I watched Blue Velvet. It is a disturbing adventure into a world of insanity and depravity. My favorite part of the entire movie is when a drug-fueled Dennis Hopper proclaims "I'LL FUCK ANYTHING THAT MOVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Dennis Hopper's character uses the word "fuck" as a non-specific verb which can be used in almost any context. Going for a joyride at 110 mph? That is fucking. Pacing back and forth in a prostitute's kitchen is also fucking. Eating fabric is fucking. If Dennis Hopper says a word, it is more likely to be fuck (or a derivative of fuck) than not. He often says "Fuck you, you fucking fuck!" Notice how 3 of the 5 words are fuck, and the only other word he uses to form the sentence is "you"

The movie is pretty fucked up, but in the best way possible. It is directed by David Lynch, so you should probably see it if you haven't yet.

Excellent. It's always good to be reminded about how amazingly stupid we are as a species. With a particular emphasis on American stupidity, which, to be fair, does trump all.

I just watched a pretty kick ass movie called Hanna, I was skeptical at first but it's pretty cool.

I revisited Jurassic Park on blu-ray. One of my all-time favorite movies. The CG dinos created in 1993 still hold up quite well to this day better than any CG dino created after this film, and the digital creatures continue to seamlessly blend in with their animatronic counterparts. "So if it's so seamless, then how can you tell the difference, Herr Überführer?" you may ask. "Well, it's very simple," I'd reply. It's much more efficient to use animatronics in close-up shots and CGI in wider shots, so really it's just common sense.

I also watched Captain America: The First Avenger, and in what could've easily been the corniest Marvel adaptation -- even cornier than Spider-Man -- a lot of those temptations were successfully dodged, and I enjoyed the film quite well. I was also glad that it wasn't a shameless ad for the upcoming Avengers movie until the final scene before the credits. But goddammit, lose those in-your-face 3D shots that make even a 2D movie more distracting than it needs to be.

Watched The Room with the accompanying Rifftrax. It's been called the Citizen Kane of terrible movies, and I believe it lives up to that reputation. Part bad softcore porn and part highschool play, with too many laughable moments to mention. OH HAI MARK! Highly recommend, but only with the Rifftrax.

Watched 'Working Girls', it's one of those '80's climb to the top of Wall Street movies. It's an interesting watch when I've got 99%s camped out 3 blocks away. Maybe I'll hit Risky Business next.
