I use it more as a reference to the ocean than the crab itself. Sounds cooler and explains a lot more that way. I never got why the nurturer/"mother" of the astrological signs was a crab. Maybe because they nest near the shore, so they make their homes in comfortable and soothing environments?

I too think of it as the ocean, and I think you're on the right track. Cancer is connected to shelled creatures in general, which represents protecting the inner core. Just think about it symbolically. Hard on the outside and soft on the inside. It's ruled by the moon which is feminine energy, and the fourth house of the chart which is home, mother, and family.

If I'm interpreting it correctly it appears that I'm actually a couple days from being between the two signs.
