I'm trying to understand how a computer algorithm can know if something sounds matter-of-fact.

I would assume it looks for keywords, and particularly sentence and grammar structure. In any case for an algorithm to be able to tell type (a complex psychological analysis), it would have to be very damn complicated.

How is it Fi? I've never heard NFP's complaining about people being empathic! I've heard them claiming to be empathic, complaining about people not being empathic, and bewailing a lack of "truly empathic" relationships in their lives, but I've never heard anything like that from any NFP I've ever known!

The first passage is talking about a BDSM prostitute mind you, which doesn't seem the kind of thing an Ne Fi person would condone, let alone be involved with But it's not analysing the subject matter is it? - Just the style. I wanna see more about how it claims to be doing this.

Yeah, that second paragraph could easily have come from a pissed off ENFP, an SFP, or an INTJ in touch with their Fi.

My SFP ex is the antichrist. Trust me, Fi can be MEAN.

I used multiple paragraphs with this test; I tried using everything from reasearch papers to replies I posted on this forum. The results all confirmed INTJ with a few INTP exceptions.

The test is most likely more accurate when you write on your own accord about something that you feel strongly about. It also seems to give the best results when using a long single paragraph. It also should go without saying that you must be writing in first-person from your point of view. The subject matter is probably as important as the writing itself.

It's probably not a good idea to use someone's fiction as a sole source of typing them.

For example, if you take one of Edgar Allan Poe's horror stories, one of his poems, and then compare those to his non-fiction critical essays, you'll see a world of difference in style.

However, I'd like to add that I took two famous passages from The Great Gatsby and got ESFP and INFP....and I strongly believe that F. Scott Fitzgerald was ISFP.

When a person writes something as expansive as a novel, there's going to be a broad range of functions used, especially if the author is speaking in character or trying to project a particular point of view which is not his or her own.

By the same token, most critical essays for school assignments will probably be NT or STJ, and I'd say that the vast majority of popular fiction would type as F.

I tried this with a couple different posts I made in the "Ask an ESTJ" thread, and each time, I came out... INFJ.

I tried it with some of my fiction that I had written in the first person. Regardless of the MBTI type of the character I was writing as, I got ESFJ. 95% F, both for the ISTJ character and for the ESTP character.

Do I really write like a feeler????

Heh. This typed me as ISFJ based an old email I wrote.

I also tested the writings of a woman with a fitness website I like. I believe her to be ENTP. This typed her as ISFJ twice, ESTP once.

Neat idea, but I'm not impressed with the results. I too would like to know exactly what they use to measure preferences.

I tried several different writing samples, too. I, T, and J were fairly consistent, but N/S was all over the map, apparently dependent upon the topic of the writing. The N score here came from a several-paragraph answer on another forum to a question I really enjoyed addressing (i.e. reflects my topical preference).
