I think I may cry tonight.

My grandmother just called us. She's 84 and was raised in Alabama. She said she never even dreamed she see a black person run as president of the United States (thanks for that one Shirley Chisolm and many others!), but she was just saying that even if Barack Obama doesn't win, she still never thought she even get to be on the edge of her seat waiting for this moment.

I know the historical significance doesn't resonate with a lot of people as strongly as it does for us, but I really can't believe we're down to this moment. When I voted today I saw people leaving the polls joyously smiling. It felt good. Whatever happens in the next few hours those smiles I saw and the call from my grandmother saying she'd never thought she'd see this is worth everything.

I think many people are jazzed up about the historical aspect of it. People are setting off some fireworks right now in my neighborhood. That's how I knew to look and see the election results.

I am sure many people feel the same way as your grandmother. It's only 40 years since Martin Luther King got assassinated, and also it was only a few years before your grandmother was born that women got the vote.

I find it sad people like Rosa Parks, Irene Morgan, and other important historical civil rights activists never got to see a black person becoming the president-elect of the US.

My mother went to hide and sleep with a pessimistic view.I almost lost hope too when she scared me!
Then I read on the new york times that night!
I was about to cry too!(I'm black, not african american but I sympathize )
