Agree with the policies or not, the inconvenient truth about Trump is that he's done exactly what he said he would do. From jobs, GDP growth, appointment of conservative judges, tax reform, the wall, border security, withdrawal from the Iraq nuclear deal and the Paris climate accord, and renegotiating NAFTA and other trade agreements... I feel like never before has there been a president who has so consistently followed through on campaign promise after campaign promise.

I will caveat this first with the statement that I lean towards Republucan. I agree with all the above though not other things you said that I havent quoted. The thing is it's not enough to be able to make the right policy. You can't live alone by effective delegating of responsibilities. As president, you need to be able to inspire and galvanize people of different persuasions. Trump, regardless of his strengths is incapable of this. His impact on government and the populace is largely polarizing. He is ineffective as a leader. He may very well get reelected but I question as to that being a wise decision for the populace. We just need better candidates that show well I guess.

Hey Highlander, I know he probably has no shot in hell, but what are your thoughts on Bill Weld running against trump in the primary? And what are your thoughts on his politics, overall? Would you consider a vote for him if he, by some miracle, were able to topple Trump in the primaries? I know it's never going to happen, but let's just pretend it could for the sake of discussion.


Personally, if there weren't so much at stake on the democratic side, I would consider using my primary vote for someone challenging Trump, and I'd consider supporting Weld in a general election if he stuck to his moderate platform.

It used to be that I knew and somestimes even liked the people who posted in it, because I used to spend a lot of time here, much of it outsite the politics subforum, even in the parts that deal with typology. Now it is that I know people here slightly better than at any place at which I have not registered yet. Internet discussions now simply take up much less time in my life.

There are over 9,000 posts. If you want to get to know me, you can read most of them. Some, of course, have been hidden in the course of the nonsensical crackdown on the politics subforum.

He’s at least principled and interested in restoring governmental transparency. He wants to restore power to citizens to take part in decision making via their elected officials. What we currently have and have had for a while is an oligarchy where the president, house speaker and top senate officials work to secure the interests of their corporate puppet masters. He doesn’t just pretend to support civil liberties like a lot of his colleagues

Well, that wouldn't make him a Republican now would it lol. I also think the Republican party is corrupt as fuck, and too set in their ways. But at the same time, they are a predictable evil, where as the Democrat party always struck me as being far more dangerous in their corruption because of the lines they toe.

Even if your guy got elected, I highly doubt he can do anything about anything. Trump can get away with it, because he has balls, money, connections, and a reputation and doesn't give a fuck about image. Your average politician, not so much. But id love to be surprised.

Questionable, if they do enough damage through the months of primaries they can significantly weaken him for GE. What is probably the general idea behind these primary challenges.


The thing is Trump isn't really a conservative: he was often in the company of pornstars and similar people, he don't really live by 10 commandments and cares about religion only in declarative manner, he doesn't care about plenty of stuff that could stablize many families, his trade wars aren't really conservative concept (conservative in American sense), from what I see he is adding new trillions to government debts year after year, ... etc. Therefore if media bubble bursts there could be "shocking results" in the end, since Trump as a whole is just a "media construct" and it can burst at any time.

I will give you that he is principled and he supports civil liberties. He's now my representative and while I won't vote for him because the country needs something much larger with the full weight of the federal govt. behind it and that doesn't square up with small govt./Libertarian views, I respect him. He is the only Republican rep that I have ever seen hold any kind of town hall in this part of Michigan. Quitting the GOP and losing his former donors that are seriously garbage people, is an excellent start to a fairly obvious presidential run in 2024.

He's now my representative and while I won't vote for him because the country needs something much larger with the full weight of the federal govt. behind it and that doesn't square up with small govt./Libertarian views, I respect him. He is the only Republican rep that I have ever seen hold any kind of town hall in this part of Michigan. Yeah, I suspect he will probably sit out the 2020 election. None of them would be able to oust Trump in a primary and he'll go nowhere in an independent run for President. Best bet is if he runs in the Republican primaries as an independent in 2024. Assuming they don't have some rule preventing independents from participating in their primaries.

Of course he's now made himself a target for the GOP. They'll put money into getting him voted out of congress next year.
