For 300,000 years we were concerned with survival and reproduction. And today in prosperous nations we have solved the problem of survival, and with seven thousand million alive today, we have solved the problem of reproduction .
Our minds have not caught up with this and we remain neuroticly obsessed with survival and reproduction.
Fortuately the Western Enlightenment provides a delightful way out of our neurosis: simply regarding ourselves as ends rather than means, and doing things for their own sake.
