What is wrong with people??? Why can't a large knobby intelligent evil giant spider just be that???? She wasn't even the same type of spider in Jackson's movie. She's actually got tough thick layers of hide for skin.

The book passage is so classic. Terrifying.

And to imagine, Gollum managed to bargain with her..!

It made her one of the most mysterious and interesting characters in the books. The whole Gollum bargain thing...That makes gollum so much more than tragic comedy relief, it makes him competent and dangerous, Book Gollum is so much scarier. And Shelob in the books is THE ULTIMATE giant spider encounter. I could enjoy the hell out of a horror movie of Gollum hunting the ring after Bilbo. You just know he did some sinister ass shit to get on her good side...

And as a spider...the alien remote mind and stillness of her. She literally felt like going up against the void and finding out that the void has been a big spider all along.

Dispite myself, superficially, I cant help it, I still like The Friendly Barefoot Spider Mommy from the game, but only because I have preexisting issues.

What cracks me up about it is...this game took a while to make. So throughout the whole process, there was at least one dude with enough power to give the note: "Why not turn the big spider from the movies into a babe, and show off her feet." And it happened. The elevator rides with that guy must have been awkward to the max.

Lol. SO it is getting an 84% from critics for Season 2.
However, I have to note Season 1 also got an 84% from critics but only a 46% from audience.

I guess we shall see!
I didnt hate it. I had fun with it. But I wasnt looking at it like a lord of the rings official thing, I was watching it like it was a bunch of people playing Lord of the Rings themed old school D&D adventure set in the long long ago before time to the lotr, it was fun to see how the different players played their characters. The poor DM is running three different games at the same time, keeping track of the hobbit/wizard party the elf and dwarf party and the Elf player paladin party, and her boyfriend, who might secretly be working with the DM to betray the party at some point party.

The show was lots of fun through that lens.

I think I just get bent because it is laying claim to all the Tolkien names and scenarios, benefiting from the good will of that, then is a pretty shitty adaptation of it.

If it was the same thing with all the names and locations changed and just a sandbox show, I'd find it kind of fun.

Note that I actually liked "Bright" although it wasn't a highly acclaimed film at all. It kind of ripped off Tolkien species and concepts but was laid into the frame work of the old "Alien Nation" show basically. The elves were snooty high-glam consumers, the orcs were blue-collar grunts, and there was culture shock. I'm totally cool with that kind of thing.

I would LOVE more than words can say if Hollywood could please go the fuck back to making fantasy and science fiction that wasnt tied to an existing intelectual property they dont want to properly homage, respect, or market or pay royalties to. How fucking cool a lot of these projects would be if they would just be an original story in a sandbox. They could be as modern or archaic as they wanted to be and wouldnt piss off the fans of existing series.

It will make you mad if you try to make Rings of Power cannon in your own mind every time.

You know it's "Grabthar's Hammer," right? Not Grapthar?

Because... read it -- it is loosely saying I "grab Thor's hammer".

Or are you calling back to a spoof of Grabthar from another game or film, lol?

I saw some short clip of this, unfortunately without the sound, that had what looked like Tom Bombadil teaching Gandalf how to make his staff. Why would Tom Bombadil do this? He's only really interested in nature, and the broader "politics" of the realm are outside of his concern, which is why they never asked him to help with the ring.

That's what's interesting about the character, that he's this insanely powerful being with no interest in power or anything that goes on. Even though he can defy the power of the ring, all he wants to do is go on nature hikes all day.

Someone was bitching tonight that the orcs are all married with kids and just want a safe home for their families.

I don't know whether this is a fabrication or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was true.

Tolkien just never really went that route. Some species of orc (If not all?) were corrupted elves, but they seem to be treated as irredeemable, almost like the Wight plague from GoT.

Elves were Corrupted by Morgoth, became Orcs, Uruk-hai were made from Orcs and Goblin/Men hybrids iirc.

I think we're gonna see a new line of division coming between this show and D&D. I'm calling it the Monsters are People too split. They want everyone in stories to be homogenized so they dont have to worry about all that pesky depth and complex writing. The audience needs to see themselves, their friends, and neighbors and co workers in all things or they can't engage. I knew this was coming when they decannonized volo's guide to monsters in favor of monsters of the multiverse where theres no alignment charts and everyone starts out from the same metaphorical starting line.

Laughing about how the article crows at how they changed the appearance of Sauron "just through makeup" and how gifted the makeup artists are. Like, geez, dudes, don't you guys ever watch Tik-Tok? Skilled amateur cosplayers also can do this easily enough, and your film crew is getting paid for it -- so i sure hope professionals can make a dirty guy look clean and elfin without prosthetics.

To me this is part of the fallout from the loss of practical effects as a mainstay.

The more amazon moves it to the front of my continue watching, the less it makes me want to watch it. I'll see you at the end of the season Rings of Power, you're not the Legend of Vox Machina, I wont be tuning in once a week just for you. You're plucky, and its kind of adorable to watch you try so hard to fall so short, you should have been an original setting and story. It doesnt make you hacky to have your own magic ring fantasy series, the 80's and 90's were full of you. But if you want to be THE fantasy magic ring series, you gotta do at least as good as Saga of the Volsungs, and Tolkien, glorious nerd that he was, put int the work. You need to put in the work ROP, THEN you might take priority in my continue watching list, cutting in line like that. That's what Jade would do in From. Its tacky and sad.
