Gladiator II: Everybody learned all the wrong lessons.

Im going to bet that we see the coliseum used to assassinate the emperor there's going to be poison used on someone, and Pedro is going to channel either the Mountain or Martel in the coliseum. Though if a chest burster appears and this turns into an ancient aliens movie... I take back all my cynicism of Ridley Scott as a director.

That would be cool if this was a stealth Alien or Predator film. "HOLY SHIT WHAT JUST CAME THRU THAT GUY'S CHEST???"

Gladiator II: 16 Roman Candles

Most of the movie actually takes place in a suburb of Rome, and in high school no less. It's John Hughes Gladiator II script. It ends in a young Gaulish boy thwarting Roman intruders with a series of elaborate traps.

I kinda do, mostly because it just looks like a rehash of Gladiator. What's the actual story? Is there anything new to say?

This is another Scott film no one asked for, but the studio thinks it can make money or Scott's trying to bolster his haphazard film record lately.
I'm with Beak on this one. Any action drama NOT based on the insufferable superhero trope is a breath of fresh air IMO. What are there now, 70 MCU movies plus 15 DC ones? That's at least 65 trips to the same well too often. Emphasis on at least.

I can handle a 2nd Gladiator movie, rehash or no. I quite enjoyed the first one.

Lol, okay -- good for you. Enjoy your sequel/rehash. I don't really want to see any more superhero films right now (well, aside from Deadpool 3 -- it's the only one that probably won't suck this year) or a Gladiator rehash. Something actually new would be nice.

So I got my 4K copy of Civil War (reticulated casing) yesterday and watched it again after seeing it in the theater a few months back at release.

Honestly, I think the worst thing here was that they marketed the shit out of it under pretense of falsehood -- so the film likely got more moviegoers into the theater than a typical Alex Garland film, but then they were all pissed off that the film wasn't actually focused on the "Civil War in the USA". It's actually a plot of "Pro takes a newb under her wing against her best judgment, and how the newb supplants her as she finds herself changing and not being the same woman anymore."

I moved the rest of my comments over the Alex Garland thread, where they should probably be....

My favorite film of that he's written and directed is probably Annihilation (with it being way out there) but of course Ex Machina is in a close tie with it.

Finally a real trailer:

I'm shocked, but...... I don't hate it!

Oh, and one other thing. I'm sure the comments are full of people complaining about how Denzel Washington being in this is "woke" even though it's not. Everyone is always getting ancient civillizations wrong...
These idiots aren’t aware that the Roman Empire occupied Northern Africa, not to mention having indirect contact with multiple distant cultures via an elaborate network of trade routes. It’s not implausible that Romans would have encountered and interacted with dark skinned Africans, not to mention East Asian people

It’s funny because those right wingers that get the most upset about “muh history” usually have a very surface level understanding of actual history and most of them have probably never actually read any books on the ancient world.

Yeah, I believe they did have contact with the Qin dynasty and possibly even trade. There was also an emperor called Phillip the Arab.

I also got some covertly Nazi Facebook page last night called the "Dragon Scythian Horde."It had an artifact shaped like a swastika which they were claiming was from North America, which is certainly possible given the prevalence of that shape, but my spidey sense was tingling. Sure enough, I found a reference to some kind of claim that real Native Americans were Caucasian, or something like that. That's the smoking gun. Scythians were invoked as a code for Aryan, I believe. I reported it but I'm sure nothing will come of it. I see the people monitoring this kind of thing not recognizing it unless it's extremely obvious. This required some additional knowledge to decode which I'm sure doesn't help matters. It also comes off as fairly "evidence-based."

So the real Native Americans were supposed to be Caucasian (ever though they were nowhere near the Caucasus), kind of like how the real Jews were African (at least for Kanye)? These people sound a little confused.

The swastika was featured in Native American stuff ages before the Nazi party existed, and a bunch of other cultures around the world have had their own variants too. Finland's military still uses it, but they've always had it oriented vertically instead of diagonally, which is one way you can tell the good guys from the bad guys at a glance.
