It looks like Judge Dredd might be a good campy movie, but I wonder if it's self-aware in the way Total Recall is. Isn't it based on a British comic book that was originally satirical and that it got lost as it crossed the ocean?

I haven't seen the 90's version with Sylvester Stallone, so I'm not sure. It definitely is based on the Brit comic from the 80's (?) but I haven't really read it.

Alex Garland wrote and then covertly directed the 2010's one, so it's not campy but it's a pretty nice little action flick.

Oh, Alex Garland. That piques my interest. I just assumed all those reboots of stuff like that in the 2010s were worthless slogs. Good to know that this was not always the case.

I was thinking of the one with Stallone; the clip I watched reminded me of Total Recall (w/ Arnold) a little bit.

It's the 90's movie with Sylvester Stallone and Rob Shenider you're looking for. I consider it part of his Demolition saga.
Stallone doesnt wear the helmet through most of the movie, which pissed off a lot of people, but personally I didnt care.

Watched House (1977) this afternoon. I'm complete befuddled. It's like so bad narratively but kind of spellbinding in the coherence of its creative vision, novel ways to do things with limited 70's effects, and just its raw absurdity. Did I hate it? Did I love it? Would I have liked it better had I been high, drunk, or both? It seems funner to watch with friends and laugh at it the whole way through. it's just kind of glorious in its brazenness and complete indifference to whether the audience is enjoying it or not.

And talk about 70/80's soundtracks that wouldn't seem at first listen to fit with the film they go with -- but this somehow works.

My sister and I caught Halloween III on cable many years ago. I think in part because the masks are dopey-looking, we thought it was goofy at first, and we thought it was kind of goofy at first, but it became clear (to me, anyway) that it's actually a creepy movie. I think the masks being kind of dumb and cheap-looking and innocuous is actually sort of the point. It suggests the false innocence which is the same thing with the jingle, which is dopey (it's just London Bridge) but also a little unsettling somehow.

I think the new It movies did a good job with little unsettling things to make it a creepier movie. Pennywise drooling a little at times, and the offset eyes. And the long staring pauses. That really connected me to the movies in a way that a lot of horror doesnt. I like weird little slow burn subtle creepies in movies. I like when a movie telegraphs a jump scare and then just rakes me over the coals for ten minutes and it never comes. I like when theres practical effects and the monster is something surreal. The Babadook was a good example of this. I liked Halloween III alright as I remember. I think it was a bold and creative thing to do for the franchise.

The VVitch was a lot of fun too. I wish we had more period horror like this, instead of trying to make the audience feel like they were in the movie by substituting a character or a meta reference for a random audience memeber(regardless how many people relate to it) and put the audience there by just giving us a glimpse through a window in time, that doesnt know we're here. That being said. I would love the shit out of a horror comedy about the eternal adventures of Black Peter the Goat, and have Bruce Campbell play a comedic version of Soloman Kane hunting him through history into the modern time, where he's hiding out in a petting zoo. I would watch the fuck out of that movie.

Well, Black Phillip -- but I'd love to see his escapades through the centuries. Would you like to baaa deliciously?

Watched most of the conjuring universe films, including la llorona

I think I enjoyed Conjuring II, Annabelle Comes Home, and Devil Made Me Do It the most. Least favorite are La Llorona and Annabelle I

They’re a guilty pleasure, not stellar films, but lifted up by strong casts. The more Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are featured, the better

I watched Bottoms tonight -- the typical high school misfit film we've all seen through many different decades -- although this one has two queer female besties who end up starting a fight club for women accidentally when trying to hook up with girls they are interested in.

I was a bit disappointed in the plotting at times -- the film's middle and then leading to the ending is pretty much the same kind of setup we see in so many films -- but it also has some really great lines, there's a few gasp-worthy moments, the best use of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" I've seen in a film, and a hell of an explosive and off the rails ending. (I hope that was a prop sword!) The acting is pretty decent as well.

Yeah, pretty much Farmiga and Wilson elevate the material as best as they can.

Why is it called Bottoms? (The title activates something extremely silly in my brain, so I'd like to know why it's called that.)
