To be fair there was already a "video games meet geocaching" AR game out there for a few years, Ingress. This Pokemon game is made by the same company.

I was just playing that one. It's just my kind of game, the type I wish was around when I was a kid. But I have duties and walking around town hacking imaginary portals is, however nice, a waste of time.

Didn't get to play today because I had my support group which is right at the time I usually go to catch pokemon (in the evening when it's not 110 out). Boo! But I'll be going out to the park pretty much every night this week with my friend to play.

Im in LA and how the teams are broken up here is fucking hilarious. the west is all blue and the east is all red and then yellow is just in little pockets everywhere.

idk why people are saying the app's phenomenon is due to a hivemind mentality. so many people in their 20s now grew up on pokemon, and pokemon itself still has an enormous fanbase. mixing that with an easily accessible mobile app makes for HUGE popularity. i don't get how people think they're somehow "above" others for not playing the game - i honestly thought we left hipsters back in 2013.

any harm the app has "caused" i blame on the actual people for lacking common sense. many people i know with social anxiety disorder and depression are having this app do wonders for their lives - where are the reports on that? hell, even people who are physically disabled are able to report this and have their accounts get changed so more pokemon will appear in their immediate surroundings. idk, knee-jerk reactions to technological innovations just seem off-putting to me.
