I had lunch with my 5th grade teacher today. It's been 40 years since I was in his class, but I have kept in touch with him over the years. I used to visit his classroom every couple of years. After I'd left home, I'd stop in and see him when I came to town. I sort of lost touch for a while, but about 20 years ago I started sending him a Christmas card, and he would send me one, too. He's actually the one who gave me the idea of the family newsletter at Christmas time.
When I moved back to the state 10 years ago, I went to visit him with my husband and kids. I had lunch with him once several years ago. Mostly, he forwards me emails.
So since I decided to try to pay more attention to people in my real life, I wrote him a little email the other day and mentioned we should go out to eat. He is a guy that though I've been curious what his type is, I've never felt like I knew for sure.
So today he sends me an email, so when are we going to lunch? There's two kinds of people in the world
... those who know I meant "sometime in the future" and those who thought I was making plans now.
At first I told him it would have to be in the new year, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized, I was sitting home with nothing to do today. No time like the present! I said to myself!
We went to eat at a Chinese buffet that I like, and he let me give him Jack Flak's test to see what his type is. It turns out he's an ISTJ.
We were his first class fresh out of college. You should have seen the way he ran our class like he was a drill Sargent. He played guitar in class, and it was because of him that I learned how to play guitar. I had a wicked bad crush on him! He broke my heart when he went and got married.
We spent two hours together. I enjoyed his company. Today was the first time that I called him by his first name, even though he gave me permission years ago. He went to shake my hand goodbye, but I gave him a little kiss instead.
