I went out to run errands this morning, including getting my hair cut. For the last 5 years or so I've gone to this small neighborhood old-style hole-in-the-wall type barber shop, but a month or so ago they lost the lease on the shop around the corner from my house and moved.
First thing, their new shop is shared with a "salon", apparently a pretty popular one among elderly ladies (it had been next door to the old barber shop - apparently they both couldn't renew the lease and so moved in together). Now this was a little bit of culture-shock... going from a small, quiet shop with maybe 4 or 5 guys present (including the barbers) at once to a much larger shop filled with people (mostly women) talking up a storm. But at least the barber was the same guy I've been going to for years (an elderly guy who's been a barber for years), so I knew I was in the right place, anyway. Then, as a greeting, the following exchange...
Barber (motioning for me to sit in the chair): "Hi, how are you?"
Me (sitting down): "Good, thanks. How are you?"
Barber: "Good. So when do you get ordained?"
Me:
Me: "Uh..."
Barber: "Aren't you over at the seminary?"
Me (with nervous laugh): "Um, no, I think the boss would be unhappy about that." (yeah, a lame effort at a joke, I know)
Barber: "Oh."
So he cuts my hair, and as I'm getting up, he says, "I'm sorry I thought you were a priest... I guess it's just that you looked so angelic that I just assumed."
I made some lame joke about being called far worse, thanked him, and left. But just weird...
