Living outdoors... for the rest of your life

I know I wouldn't want to do it long term because I'm the one that takes the kids camping. My husband, the INTP, has no inclination to spend his leisure time in a non-climate controlled bug habitat. I've dragged him fishing a couple of times, but he always makes me bait his hook.

If we did ever have to kill our own meat, I know I would be doing the killing and the cleaning. I wouldn't probably hunt, though. I'd head down to the local farm store, buy a small animal trap and hope to catch a boy and a girl rabbit. Not my idea of a good time, but I'm darn well not going to sit around and starve.

I enjoy learning about the uses of local plants, so I do know a bit, but I'm not in a hurry to find out if we'd survive under primitive conditions.

Why not just buy the male/female rabbits instead of the trap?

In theory, it sounds amazing. In practice, however, I'm allergic to anything with pollen, fur, feathers, I'm extremely heat sensitive, and I seem to be the one that attracts the most bugs. It would not end well.

For the first time in human history we have overcome scarcity.

There is no need to keep singing, "We shall overcome", 'cause we already done it.

At least we have done it in most of the developed world since WW II.

And we have done it with the Consumer Society. And we keep on growing exponentially. We are spectacularly successful.

And naturally there are those who look back in reaction. They look back to wilderness and to tribalism. But the truth is there is now only Consumer wilderness and consumer tribalism.

So today wilderness and tribalism are purely Romantic. We romance ourselves by thinking about living outdoors for the rest of our lives. But National Parks are lovely to visit but not live in, and tribal peoples today are violent, addicted and illiterate while etribalism prospers and grows exponentially.

But I don't want you to think I am hard hearted. No, I am actually a Romantic and I eat out alfresco every day.

The raw idea of this appeals to me. But I could never get into it beyond mere imagination.

Ultimatly, my idea of evolving does not lie with regressing to nature. However, understanding nature is still an important aspect. I suppose for a year or so I could do something like this.

I wouldn't mind doing something like this. My only drawbacks are that I like to be around my family. I don't think I would want to isolate my young children but I think it's neat.

Interestingly enough he says he wish he had someone to share it with. Is anyone actually ever content?

I read a nonfiction book called something like "It began with an island" I think it was self published so it's not available anymore. Some lady married a crazy man who decided he wanted to buy an island. They actually bought an island and moved onto it. It had nothing on it at all when they first got there and it was only available by boat. Sounded pretty neat to me.

The grass is always greener...

I suppose the best course of action is to experience as many lifestyles as possible in one lifetime. Rather than conforming oneself to one single lifestyle.

I wouldn't like to go live in the outdoors for the rest of my life, but I certainly have the know-how to do so. Boy Scouting isn't useless, you know.
