I'd be really surprised if Margaery doesn't have something up her sleeve; it would be a huge disappointment if she were just playing this straight.

I think the part that confuses matters is that Olenna -- one of the best schemers in the show, and she's even responsible for one of the largest plots left undiscovered by the characters at least -- isn't part of it (as far as we know) and is acting like Margaery was subverted somehow.

Yeah, I think Olenna has been kept out of the loop for this just because of the situation.
We know Margaery has Tommen around her little finger, when she wants (along with Ser Pounce).
And she can't depend on her brother -- she has to be the strong one now.

I'm so hoping she has a method underlying this.

Sadly, this would mean that she might be more effective than Cersei.
After all, she might have weaseled out of the Walk of Shame.

Does that mean that his story arc, and everything in the show will end in Essos, or in the Targaryen occupation of Southern Westeros?

That's some heavy handed foreshadowing. I don't know, man, are we just going to be dealing with a bunch of tidying up of loose strings from here on out? That sounds dull.

I was pretty sure that was from dialog in this last episode. I'll dig it up this evening to confirm.

I went back and rewatched parts of the episode.

he says (something very close to), "One way or another, the Night King will find his way to the world of men. And when he does, you'll [Bran] be waiting/ready for him."

So it's not really clear where they will meet, exactly. Pretty much as soon as they hit the Wall, but could be anywhere lower as well.

1. I think one reason Margaery confused me at the end is that, when I rewatched the scene with her/Tommen, she's DARN good. I mean, she's talking very much in the language of sincere/earnest religious conversion that I am familiar with from all my years as part of a faith + moral introspection. She doesn't sound duplicitous, and in fact what she describes (as how she would "put on shows of helping the poor" for example) to pretend to be a good person, well, that's exactly correct. She DID do that. Normally she has some "tells" -- inflection, context, something -- to give her away in the past, but her it just plays very straight.

Tommen even is confused, because even HE is more skeptical of the Sparrow than she sounds at that time.

So either she isn't lying, OR she didn't let Tommen in on her manipulations (so she's manipulating him), or she talked to him off-camera which we didn't see so that he would play along as well.

There's some interesting camera play between her and the Sparrow and Olenna when the army arrives. Margaery looks confused and concerned when she sees her grandmother and when listening to how the Sparrow is playing things. So, yes, obviously if she is playing them all, her grandmother doesn't know. The look on her face could be shame or it could simply be, "Crap, I was taking care of this, to get back to the Keep, so then we could turn on the Sparrow, and now if the soldiers attack, everything could go to hell and even my grandmother could be in danger." Like, somehow her political manipulations got her in over her head.

It'll be interesting to see....


2.I like Meera a lot. She has been a faceless character, kind of a third fiddle. But she finally gets a few moments to shine in the beginning of the episode. I felt so bad for her when she's trying to drag Bran along and just can't it, it's beyond her. The way she covers him with herself and tells him she's so sorry... just a really good minor moment.


3. I listened to the Arya/Lady Crane thing again (so good), and what I missed the first time is that perhaps there was some identification with Cersei there, but when she is describing how the "character Cersei" in the play might respond to the death of her son, she was describing HERSELF over the death of her father in King's Landing: "She's upset because she never got to say goodbye. She wouldn't just be sad... she'd be ANGRY."

Probably others picked up on that, but I missed it on first pass.

Also, it's not just the younger actress who hates Lady Crane. They all dislike her (or at least feel a little jealous) because she's talented enough that everyone in the audience -- people and animals -- likes her and ignores the efforts of the others as if they did not exist.

I agree with you about the "killing" trend, and I felt like it was for the same reason: While some of the plotline acceleration was appreciated, there were other situations (like the Dorne thing, or Osha, and so forth) that felt more out of convenience and thus lost some of their dramatic steam. I felt the same way about Barristan as well (and I haven't read the books); it seemed to me like they cleared him out so as to make the return of Jorah a possibility, create a space for Tyrion and Varys to run the city, etc. But he deserved better.

Yeah, Barristan he had a really good scene in the book that they never got to in the show because they killed him off before that.

I actually really liked the episode last night. Better than some of the earlier episodes of the season. I think my favorite thing was the stuff with Sam; that all worked quite well.

I too thought there was more going on with Margaery, at least until Olenna Tyrell said "They've beaten us." Now I'm not so sure. She did get out of a walk of shame, however.

I also liked seeing the Freys again and what was going on with that situation. I wonder what's going to happen when Brienne and Jaime meet.

Game of Thrones Final Seasons Will Be Shorter, a Director Confirms

Okay, I wish they had found a more stable pace. Going from drag-out to pell-mell hasn't really been cool, they really needed to give a little more room to breathe to some of the things happening this season.

Not only will they beat GRRM's book schedule, but the show could be over for years and he might never finish the books if he passes on. How weird.

Some interesting stuff in the episode:

- Looks like Sandor's arc here isn't as towards peace as the book was suggesting, the show steers him right back towards violence in the "Heeeeeee're Johnny!" sense. I liked Ian McShane; it sucks he had, like, one episode. It did unfortunately feel rather contrived, to have all that happen in one episode and then have that fate befall the group before Sandor realized it, despite him actually warning it would happen.

- Lyanna Mormant. You go, girl! Davos meanwhile is like the relief pitcher closing out games where the starter(s) can't make headway.

- The Freys are like the Keystone Kops of Westeros. No wonder Walder refuses to die; his line will effectively die with him.

- The Arya segment was a little lame; did she think she could just walk away? Srsly? I wouldn't be letting anyone near me, especially the twin of the witch from Snow White. But we see the Waif not only didn't try to avoid suffering, but specifically stabbed in her in the gut a few times... longest and most painful way to go. Anyway, I guess the options are (1) Arya dies but somehow lives within the Faceless Ones or (2) Arya goes to Lady Crane, although I'm not sure what good that does. Not sure what other plot options exist.

- John is still mopey. I think he figures he's just gonna die again because he has no troops. It was nice to see the Wildings stick with him; Tormund sold that properly. Sansa plays everything regally, I like how she stays in character, but the Glovers had some good points to make; I think she's stuck begging Littlefinger for help over at the Aerie.

- I forgot Yara was les/bi, but pretty funny. I'm glad Theon seems to be pulling out, although it's very difficult for him. Sounds like their play is to get to Dani before Euron can.

- Margaery is playing them all like tiny fiddles. Good for her. I have no idea what her Big PLan is yet, but I think maybe she isn't quite sure yet either and is just doing recon until something clicks. This kind of thing is what Margaery does best.

- Olenna takes down Cersei. Better yet, Cersei takes it on the chin and doesn't fall. And better yet, Olenna doesn't feel any sympathy and hits her some more. Very much character establishers for both women, to flesh out where they are both at in this juncture. Cersei has done horrible things and I've hated her a long time, but her willingness now to at least admit her flaws and missteps shows she has grown a bit; she might go down, but at least she's in her right mind to some degree, and has taken ownership of her actions. And it looks like next week, she decides the time has come...

- Jaime's just kind of screwed situation-wise. Not sure where he's going to take things. But hey, BRONN IS BACK and in true-to-life form.

Hmm, this was a slow-paced episode (comparatively), although some key things did take shape:

- The Hound is back, no surprise.....his 1 episode arch, from re-introduction, towards redemption and humanity, and then, back to taking up the sword axe....was a bit artificial.

- Margery is still a Rose, which is no surprise. I love how strong that family's bond is to one another. Had a feeling Margery did the ol' switch-e-roo initially, to buy time, and figure out how to get her brother out. Now, she's also worried about her granny. They're so tight-knit in this dysfunctional world. I love it.

- Yay! Finally an episode without Dany,her Dragons and her "I am a dragon lady, hear me roar," speech; refreshing.

- Really enjoyed the conversation (take-down) between Oleanna & Cersei. Cersei's character arch has been one of the most solid ones, as has been Jamie's, her lover's/brother's. Which makes me anxious. It's like just when a character is getting to a point where they are realizing certain things about themselves, the rug inevitably gets pulled from underneath. I feel like this is leading to a big climax, for Cersei.

- along the lines of Cersei, Jamie is off to get back the castle for her, and really intent on his purpose, but he meets Blackfish, who delivers a stinging line, "I wanted to meet you to get the measure of you, and I am disappointed." Blackfish is one of the Ole G's, and I think, for some reason, Blackfish's statement hit a nerve with Jamie. Add to that, the inevitable meet-up with Brienne, Jamie's Jiminy Cricket, and I don't know how strong Jamie's conviction to support his sister's plan will be, as time and events pass. He might put up a good fight in the beginning, but I have a feeling, eventually, he'll see reason, and align with the Northern formation that's brewing.

- Speaking of the Northern formation, Lyanna Mormont. Hilarious. Davoos, the Kid Whisperer. 62 men. Liked the brief levity that scene provided.

- And, if the Ironside heirs meet up with Dany and her team, that's another Northern-Dany alliance formed, via, Theon. Theon had met Tyrion in one of the earlier episodes, if I can recall, and he came off as a bit of a shit-head. Will be a surprise for Tyrion to see the change in Theon, and what he did for Sansa (who Tyrion has a soft-spot for, as his previous 'wife'), and likely leading to solidifying that alliance. Theon and his sister at the brothel. Ouch, what an insensitive, but effective wake-up call for Theon. I can't remember what Ramsey did to him? Did he cut off his penis? Or castrate him? Or both?

- Speaking of Tyrion, lacking from this episode, but it made me realize that he is now the only character, it seems, who has dipped his foot in all the 'worlds', save a direct face-to-face rendezvous with a Whitewalker. But he's heard about them, when he was at Castle Black, even though he initially thought the worst of the North's threat was Wildlings. He knows, or has had, interactions with all the key players thus far, and knows their motivations/potential, pretty well: Dorne, Highgarden, and all the King's Landing players. He knows Littlefinger/Castle Eyrie. He has met Theon. Davoos has seen what Tyrion can do (epic Battle of Blackwater). He knows the Stark children, and notably, has seen who Jon Snow was becoming up at the Wall. He is connected to Varys and Dany and the dragons, now. Spent time with Jorah (another Northern House), and travelled through the wasteland and its dangers of Old Valyria. Came face to face with Stonemen and the disease. Has seen the Fire God cult and met a Red Priestress. Only SL he is left out of, is the Children of the Forest and the Whitewalkers. Thus far. Will be interesting to see what his role will be in coverging all these key elements together in the final moments.

- Ah, Arya, never trust a sweet little granny when you know you have a bounty on your head. Idiot! Of course she will survive. But, it was humbling to see her walk through the streets of Braavos, injured, bleeding on the streets, amongst strangers, who looked on, without offering any help, any mercy. Kind of like what she did to the Hound. Hmm...karma? I'm glad she is learning all these great lessons through her time in Braavos. I didn't want her to become an impersonal, cold-blooded assassin. Glad her arch went the way it did.

Cant wait for....
- Cersei and her Mountain. He's been hanging around for far too long, need to see his unleashed potential, especially now that his brother is back on screen, as well.
- What will happen to Arya?
- Jamie's Blackfish dilemma.
- What came of Sansa's raven message? (Did she reach out to Blackfish? Likely)
- Bran?
