I think that my greatest fear is that I will humiliate myself irreparably, or do something mean, biased, ignorant or stupid, in front of a huge group of people that I encounter every day, and that as a result they will all reject me or make fun of me and I'll be alone.

So I guess my fear is a combination of a few of those mentioned earlier.

It's a hurdle I have struggled with for a very long time. It really sucks being alone, especially now (around the holidays), oh well. Better luck next year.

In response to your other post, I accepted long ago that there is nobody that is perfect. We all have our issues.

Sorry. I didn't understand your cryptic message. I didn't know your fear of being alone for long periods of time was actually a fear of never finding someone to spend your life with. That's quite different than being alone in a general way.

That doesn't change the fact that SJs tend to enjoy belonging to groups.

One of my greatest fears is being told to do something that has a significant impact on my life without clear instructions.

If I were disabled or crippled in some way that was irreversible.

If that happens to me I've always told people to pull the plug. Even if there is no plug.

This was one of my greatest fears after living with a newly-disabled paraplegic. I was young, very athletic, with that sense of invincibility peculiar to the young. Getting to know this young man haunted me and destroyed my sense of invincibility. I was sure I couldn't bear ever being permanently disabled. I would rather die.

Then I had a rare adverse reaction to an over-the-counter decongestant that caused a massive cerebral hemorrhage and permanently paralyzed my left side. I almost died twice during the first two months post-hemorrhage and amazingly, I struggled to live. Equally amazing was finding out, after a period of adjustment--when I did want to die at times and had to come to terms with the fact that my condition was irreversible--that living with a disability wasn't the end of my life but merely a new beginning. Yes, it was the end of life as I knew it, but it was in truth just the beginning of a new chapter of my life--and one much richer than the life I had before. I've met some of the most courageous, determined and intelligent people as a result of my disability, people I would never have known otherwise. I discovered I had the rare opportunity to design my own life within certain parameters. I've had the chance to travel more now than before my injury. I had the privilege of raising my two sons and watching them grow into fine young men.

Are there things I miss? You bet, but for the most part I haven't found life in a wheelchair all that limiting, just more adventurous. I think living with a disability has made me less afraid of life in general.

Woo, I can understand that one! Can't think of a particular case for myself, but I can tell it wouldn't be pleasant.

I did, until I decided to get over the fear by facing it. I went to Six Flags with a freind who is a rollercoaster junkie, and I basically told him to not allow me to chicken out on anything...I figured peer pressure + the desire to not look weak or afraid would give me the courage needed to try it out. I rode every single coaster in the park that day...some multiple times. They're actually pretty fun, althlough the really HUGE ones still scare me and give me sweaty palms.

I went to six flags and my friend forced me to go on one. It wasn't bad, but it was the first roller coaster for me and I didn't like the way it was structured (it was made of wood so it shook like crazy!) I havn't been on another one since! I'm still not sure about going on one that goes upside down!

But going upside down on the loops is the most fun!...and it's even more fun if you manage to hold your hands up in the air the entire time! Seriously: loops > dropping!
