So I recently bought a new computer and a wireless router. I'd gotten everything all set up and working, with one annoying exception... the router's power cable has a connector that plugs into the back of the router, and it just didn't want to stay connected. I wiggled it, tried to press gently to get it to fit, and nothing seemed to work. I didn't want to be *too* rough with it, because it would be just my luck to break it - so I lived with the fact that any minor movement would "unplug" the router, disconnecting me. Most annoying.

Yesterday I decided that this may be a manufacturing defect, and called Apple to see if I could get a replacement cord. I got one of those horrid answering menus of "press 3, press 4, press 1, we're sorry, all of our people are busy now - your expected wait is longer than 15 minutes *click*." Normally I'm pretty patient, but this made me mad. So I called the local Apple store... they said that the only thing I could do was make an appointment with a "Genius" to take a look at it, but that I needed to bring in the whole thing, both cord and router, into the store order to do so. I was already mad, and grudgingly (and probably not too politely) agreed to do that. They gave me a time and told me to come early in case someone else didn't show.

I disconnected my router, got it all boxed up in the original packaging, and took it to the Apple store. Well, they had a surge of people with appointments, so I got to stand around for 20 minutes before anyone was able to see me. When my turn came I sat down at the little "Genius Bar" in front of a shaggy-bearded young tech guy and explained my problem. I unpacked the router and cord and showed it to him, demonstrating how the plug didn't seem to fit.

What does he do? Takes the router and cord and simply manhandles the cord into the back of the router. "Oh, yeah, these stick a bit at first. Looks fine to me." He unplugs and replugs it in a couple of times just for show.

At this point I was simply covered in an ugly mass of techno-nerd shame, trying not to cringe as I apologized for wasting his time (not to mention my own). He gave me one of those "this guy's an idiot but I'll try to be nice" looks and told me that bringing it in was the right thing to do, just in case. I didn't say so, but I admit that he had a point, as I'd considered getting some wire cutters and trimming the cord's plug. Good thing I didn't, I guess.

But I still felt like an

To top it all off, before making this post I realized that I'd set my blog up to prohibit "everyone" from either reading or commenting on it. Live and learn, I guess :p
