I really like Danny Elfman. I enjoy a lot of his film scores, and I'm a big fan of Oingo Boingo, his band back in the '80s. (My sister and oldest brother got to go to one of their concerts, and I still resent them for it. Never mind that I was only five years old at the time.)

I've been trying to type him for a while now, and I'm pretty sure he's an ENTP. He's got this manic energy and nerdy mad-scientist vibe about him, and his music is very quirky; in fact, he seems to rejoice in being weird. In his own words, "I enjoy that strange feeling of putting a piece in front of the orchestra, and the looks I get back from them are, you know, 'Oh my God, what is this?'" And, "I still consistently come up with music that's impossible to play."

He could also be an ENFP. He's pretty passionate and enthusiastic. I don't know. But here's a pretty good interview, where he explains how his career became what it is today.

What do you guys think? ENTP? ENFP? Or something else entirely?

I'm intrigued. It's harder to type people when they're mature, I dug up an older interview:

He's pretty reserved, yet highly individualistic. It could be Fi tempered with E5, or it could be ENTP e4 sp/sx. I definitely sense familiarly developed themes of envy. He's in that very strange hard-to-type territory. I may dig up more on him later.

I thought ENFP, but I'm the only one who's voted so far.

God, he had crazy hair.

I know what you mean about trying to type older people. Elfman has definitely mellowed with age. He used to be much more... wacky? He seems deceptively sane in interviews and stuff, but onstage with his band, he was a total nutjob.

I got an OLDER video and it's even more revealing, as he talked about his songs a little bit and it lead me to some of Oingo Boingo's music.

I'm definitely voting for NFP, most likely ENFP, it doesn't seem to have the depth that INFP creation tends to have, but tends towards breadth. Oingo Boingo music strikes me as NF to DEVO's NT.

I'm sure you've long since already heard this, but just in case.

Also, I'll join the ENFP horde on this one.

I have heard that! I like the piece with the choir singing in Portuguese. Very pretty.

I think you guys are probably right about him being an ENFP who's toned down over the years. That may be why I mistook him for an ENTP. In any case, he's almost certainly some form of an enneagram 4. Although his music has a lot of breadth and variety, it's also very distinctly him. It has a uniquely weird vibe that is easy to distinguish from other composers. He's very individualistic that way.

Having watched and listened to all the videos posted here, I think ENFP makes the most sense. INFP crossed the mind, though.

As an ENTP, I have always felt I strongly identified with him and his work. My 2¢.
