Tomboys

Ok I hate that term, cause they're not boys. But a lot of the... ungirly girls I know are hard to type, as far as T/F goes. Most of the ones i've known have been both. Thoughts?

It's pretty general to categorize one type although I think you would find a higher percentage of tomboys amongst STP women than some other types. From what I understand of the term it implies a kind of earthiness, directness, physicality, willingness to get your hands dirty, etc. That is something I would tend to associate with some combination of Se and Ti (which INFJs actually have come to think of it).

My personality type could also be stereotyped in the opposite direction, but I have some tomboyishness in my personality as well. This is mostly because I was raised by a single mother, so I'm used to doing whatever needs to be done whether it's gathering/chopping wood, building a fire, figuring out what's wrong with my car, building furniture, etc. I enjoy working on a house as well and could enjoy building a house. It always surprises me when I find out some women avoid these things. I'm not good at (or interested in sports) though. My point is that environment and experience can bring out these qualities as much or moreso than an MBTI category.

estp, istp, infp (sorta) I've known. Don't know many girls well enough to type since most of my friends are male. also depends on your def of tomboy.

Probably not a huge type correlation, I could see it being higher in SPs and NTs, but certainly not limited to them.

I'd think xSTP, maybe followed by xSTJ to a lesser extent. I think ExxP types in general would be up there, too.

i think it's all personal style and personality in general when it comes to Tomboys, so I can't say any particular one type.

I'm definitely in the tomboy category, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I have a masculine approach according to my male and many of my female friends, I dress like I'm one step away from shaving my hair off, and I tend to favor things that are less feminine and functionality. (I won't insult the ladies by saying I like sports because many women love sports. it's not a guy thing. They just grunt about it more.)

That doesn't mean that I at all feel like (anymore at least :rolli I have to live up to this boyish standard. It's come to a point where I feel like I am who I am.. and if that's a boy thing to be, then great, and if it's a girl thing to be, then great. I do what I like and let everyone else decide if it's girly or boyish.

I think first impressions have a lot to do with it as well.. because a lot of my guy friends civilian side, meet me in girly clothing on the occasion I feel like wearing it, and instantly relate me as feminine through-and-through, and nothing will change their mindset.. annoying when it comes to things that require a less feminine touch. Likewise, people see me in guys clothing and assume I'm just some identity-scrounging girl that desperately seeks male attention in the friendish way. Whereas I think clothing has very little to do with how I want to be day to day.

Sounds like my isfj friends, she is a tomboy in so many ways yet feminine in so many others, but she would class herself as a tomboy.

I was one during my teenage years, to the point of being physically escorted out of some public toilets because according to the security guard "the mens room was over that way"


Now I have days of both, but even when I am dressed like a tomboy these days, I no longer look like a boy so much. Even if my attitude is very mannish according to some I know (especially esfj women).

EDIT: my estp sister is also a classic tomboy in attitude, but not really in dress sense.

I've always been a bit of one and I'm a INFP with some INTP leanings. I couldn't say if is a type thing. I feel like its something everyone tries to explain (they're lesbians, weirdos, just trying to be like men, deliberately contrary etc) like its something abnormal and wrong, instead of just leaving such girls to their own devices. For me personally, I really dislike that being instructed (directly and indirectly) to conform to a 'correct' feminine behaviour instead of just being allowed to be myself.

Also, it has been my experience that more STP type girls are "tomboys." I haven't known many other female NTs, so I can't comment about them. I've also known a couple of NF or SFJ types that behaved this way.

I have INTJ and INFJ female friends who all claim to have been tomboyish when they were young. I certainly was as well.

As a young child, although i was very maternal towards my brother. I never felt i was a girl. I had one doll that i used to bash against the wall holding one leg. (shudders). I have never been into make-up or dressing up (although i do now own foundation, lol which is applied occasionally). I now own 2 dresses, but i would rather wear jeans or trousers. I can't stand shopping for clothes, shoes etc. I do not do fluffy, pink and now i am separated from hubby, my hair is short.

I have never wanted girls so i am incredibly grateful i have 2 boys.

I just need a penis now.

I resonate with much of what you've said. I like doing physical things and I like fixing things. It just makes sense to me: If I see a problem, my first inclination is to try to fix it myself...regardless of what it is. From what I understand, this is not stereotypically a feminine inclination, and I suspect it could lead someone to view me as a "tomboy".

However, it seems like it's getting harder and harder to classify women under labels like "tomboy" or "girly girl". More women are expanding their areas of interest because the social stigma for doing so is dissipating. It is harder to find women who are truly one extreme or the other, and I think this is a good thing. I am seeing the same thing happen for men. Perhaps we are becoming more balanced?

My wife was a tomboy. Wore jeans, played sports, climbed trees, no makeup, etc. She grew into an incredibly beautiful woman though! She's INFJ, so I don't know how type plays into that whole equation...

I have an ISFJ friend, who's somewhat of a tomboy.. that's why we click, in that sense.

Although I dress girly girly, or have my days where I like to bust out my baggy jeans & bell-bottoms, I identify myself as having a tomboy streak, although most people who know me would say.. not really, or maybe. I can be rough and tough when I need to be. Not an insects/bugs/nature kinda girl though (although I appreciate it on the Discovery Channel).

I often click more with guys, and girls who think like guys, or at least, are more 'whatevers' about things.. Perhaps, it relates to the fact that growing up, I had an uncle I was close to? I was like his little cabbage patch kid. *Best* uncle ever..

Chicks who are into going shopping, gossiping, stuff like that, I really keep distance. Growing up in a family full of close to 25 female cousins, I know how things can get, cliche, and yah. I get goosebumps.

So, I guess it really depends?
