The Illiberal Democracy of Ancient Athens. Aristidis Hatzis, University of Athens.
Ancient Athenians introduced democracy, majoritarianism and popular sovereignty. They also introduced populism and rent-seeking. Moreover, Athenians didn’t invent the rule of law. The power of demos was almost unlimited, there were no constitutional guarantees, checks and balances. The laws were subjected to the whims of the majority of citizens or judges. Most importantly, individual rights were not recognized in Athens. The concept of liberty in Ancient Athens was very different from the concept of liberty that prevailed after the Great Revolutions of the late 18th and the early 19th century which led to the contemporary liberal democracies. We will discuss these issues with reference to famous historical episodes and trials. However, we will also see that the liberal ideas of individuality, toleration and the rule of law, appeared in a not-so-embryonic way, in three important works of the period (a tragedy, a comedy and a history book). These ideas were remarkably original but at the same time marginal. They didn’t exert any significant influence on the Athenian democratic institutions.

Sadly there are many who even in 2022 think "democracy" is just another word for "majority decision" rather than "selfadministration of the people with several mechanisms, one of which is decision taking by majority, that requires certain civil preconditions". It worries me.

French MP sued for allegedly adopting aristocratic family’s name

Emmanuel Taché de la Pagerie, a member of Marine Le Pen’s far-right party, faces legal action by descendants of the Tascher de la Pagerie family

So much for the defenders of the little man against the evil liberal elite. Nothing says man of the people like naming yourself after an empress.

Here in Germany we have the far-far-right politician Doris von Sayn-Wittgenstein who is apparently not related to the Sayn-Wittgenstein family (a prominent sideline of the very wealthy family of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein) but in all likelyhood purchased the name and title through chain adoption.

To me this makes some sense since "Empress" is evidently something that has anti-liberal vibe to it. For the most part far right is always for turning back the clock. Another issue is that almost always that wouldn't really help the people. No matter how you brand it.

Bruen vs New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. just dropped from SCOTUS.

The may issue regime of concealed carry permits existing in 6 states like California and NY just got overturned.

They now have to operate under shall issue rules. The no longer need to show special cause to get a permit.

Awesome. Not only that but the ruling establishes a new standard of review for gun cases meaning the court can revisit past decisions.

Will be interesting to see how quickly AW bans and magazine bans end up before the court.

I maintain the worst consequence of the Trump administration is the record confirmation of conservative justices to the federal bench, and we are seeing this unfold in real-time. Outside the 3 SCOTUS picks, it came with little fanfare or bombastic rhetoric, but its subtlety is precisely why it is so insidious and will cause so much harm.

And the Krill moderate chancellor just lost to the far right expansionist candidate last night.
