Even though I hate black metal, I'm the proud owner of this wonderful book : True Norwegian Black Metal Would recommend it to anyone. I like digging it up when I have visitors.

It's literally a huge book with photography from the Norwegian black metal scene mid 90ties. Basically hilarious pictures ;) It's bizarre and fascinating. My favorite coffee table book.
I think the author also did a similar book in the Bronx or somewhere.

That's cool. It's based on the series I think, True Norwegian Black Metal. Have you seen it? I remember it being super cheesy (to be fair some BM is a little cheesy anyway) but quite enjoying it at the time.
That's neat - can't say I've ever owned a coffee table book!

Nope ! Interesting, I will check it out.

I started collecting a few, years ago, but this reminds me I need to collect more. They often have unusual or cult subjects. Great for breaking the ice, "here, a photobook on Norwegian black metal" ;)

Btw I'm not sure if it features "Burzum and Mayhem" I barely know these bands. I'm stuck in early 90ties trash metal.

That's really cool and a unique hobby! You should write a coffee table book about coffee tables one day.

LOL trust me, it's a real icebreaker when people ask what music I'm into and I reply 'mostly Norwegian black metal right now'. It's a real hit with the boys...and by that I mean not at all. I mean I like other music too but it's my current phase.

Oooh I can't say I know much about thrash but I do love Venom and they were pretty influential with BM. Here's a pretty heavy thrash influenced band I recently discovered:

Dyslexxie : I'm too old for that shit ;) no offense. Would have loved it if I was 20 years younger. Metal is my first love, but in all honesty, I mostly drive to work with classical music nowadays. Besides, I love all genres now if it has an nice melody/progression. I don't care anymore even if it's Elton f*kn John.

---

Another well known metal band I've always loved : Carcass ! They have great lyrics too (pretty cynical, I always get some NT kind of vibe from them).

YOUR KINGDOM IS OF EMPTINESS,
INVISIBLE EMPIRE OF ILLUSION,
THERE'S NO MAJESTY IN YOUR EMPTY WORDS,
YOUR IDEOLOGY - SELF DELUSION,
REVISIONISM IS THE FUTURE,
SO LET'S HAIL THE SAME OLD DAWN,
KNEEL BEFORE THE SAME OLD ORDER,
YOU'RE NO KINGS - ONLY PAWNS,

YOU'RE WAITING FOR TOMORROW, WELL TOMORROW NEVER COMES,
HA, YOU'RE WAITING FOR YOUR NEW DAWN, SO SAD TO SAY THERE ISN'T ONE,
BECAUSE, (YOU FOOLS) TOMORROW BELONGS TO NOBODY,

TOMORROW - BELONGS TO NOBODY

sorry for the yelling ;)

Sorry to derail. My best book finds are usually at thrift stores when it comes to bizarre niche topics like that.

no problem as far as I'm concerned. maybe this calls for a seperate thread on cult, niche, coffee table, ... books. dunno if that has been done here already.

Haha that's fair, I can understand that!
LOVE Carcass! Such a good band and I agree, their lyrics are crazy! I can't even think of a band that sounds like them! They're on tour now too but they're so far from me unfortunately.

You guys, I cannot recommend Pallbearer's new album "Heartless" enough... It's getting really good reviews by pretty much every critic involved in the metal scene. Pallbearer has traditionally been a doom metal band but they really expand on their sound and incorporate a lot of new influences (especially with prog) in this new album. Please, if you're even just a fan of heavier music in general, give this album a listen!

My favorite track. Just a monolith of a song. Covers the whole possible spectrum of emotions; from sweeping melodies to soul crushing heaviness.

A more straightforward and familiar "Pallbearer sounding" song:

And a bonus if you've made it this far:
