Jodie Foster knows how to pick good roles:

Panic Room is excellent;
Contact is terrific.

Alakazam the Great (aka Saiyuki) (1960). This is the first Japanese anime to hit Western screens; I saw it as a kid and loved it, but it probably won't hold up.

Stand By Me - a film about that one magical summer you have with your friends
Now and Then - the female version of Stand by Me
The Sandlot - same theme, but with baseball

Places in the Heart (1984): excellent Sally Field film about overcoming adversity
Big: early Tom Hanks film about the toy industry
The Boy Who Could Fly (1986): don't remember much about this film except that I had a huge crush on Lucy Deakins

Does anyone know of any interesting movies I could watch on Netflix?

Movies I like if you think it will help you find recommendations

The Truman Show
Tangled
Zootopia
Divergent
The Hunger Games
(these are obviously not every movie I watched; just the ones I liked the best).

MovieLens provides recommendations based on movies you like.

The Time Machine (2002): terrific adaptation and it's directed by H.G. Wells' grandson
Bring It On (2000): I didn't think I'd like it but it's actually funny
Meet The Parents (2000): you've probably seen this but if you haven't, it's a classic

The Sixth Sense or as some dude on Comedy Central says "The only M. Night Shymalon film that's not a steaming pile of crap."

The Craft: about a teen coven that implodes due to conflicting personalities

The Outsiders: I don't remember much about this one only that I liked it when I saw it on TV ages ago.

My Bodyguard: INTP weakling hires overgrown ISTP to protect him from bullies

I actually prefer Unbreakable to Sixth Sense, but I really like both movies. Something about Bruce Willis' journey in Unbreakable really gets me.

Haven't seen Unbreakable and I do disagree with Comedy Central. I enjoyed "Lady in the Water" and "The Village". I thought "The Visit" was gross but still entertaining.

I am glad I didn't spoil Unbreakable then. Bruce Willis argreed to do both films after a project of his died with a huge debt. In lieu of paying it himself, he did the movies. It was some of his best work, though I do believe Die Hard is my favorite Willis movie overall.

M. Night may not get back to making great films. Such a sad thing. The talent he showed in Sidth Sense and Unbreakable was amazing. Oh, well.....

I just watched 'The Sting' on netflix a few nights ago. Con artist story, with Robert Redford and Paul Newman as leads, made in the early 70's. It was quite good!

(Contact and Amadeus are personal long time favorites of mine)

Holes: Sigourney Weaver as a villain; this is the only tolerable Shia LaBoeuf film I've seen.
Sky High: Kurt Russell as a superhero; very fun film
The Butterfly Effect: strong opinions on this one; some love it and some hate it. I enjoyed it immensely.

Totally agree! I stumbled on this one not knowing what it was and was happily surprised!

Great fun movies, successful in their intent and actually telling important messages.

A similar film my family loves is Kangaroo Jack.

Stand and Deliver: No, it's not about pregnancy exercises; it's about a calculus teacher
Mr Holland's Opus: Disgruntled music teacher makes a difference in a community
School of Rock: Another music teacher makes a difference; Jack Black's at his best here.

Starship Troopers: Mindless violence but very entertaining
The Mask: Not a Jim Carrey fan but the guy deserved an Oscar for this performance
Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Probably the best live action/animated film ever made
