I've been exploring my darker side and getting in touch with my inner anger lately, and suddenly I find myself, for the first time in my life, wanting to listen to rap music with offensive lyrics and watch violent movies.
To educate myself, I watched 8 Mile, which I liked quite a bit. I know it's very toned-down and not a realistic portrayal of the ghetto, but I liked the gloomy, oppressed feel of the neighborhood and the whole 'life sucks, I'm stuck in the rut' feel.
I've tried Jinni and nanocrowd for recommendations, and while they gave a lot of interesting suggestions, the descriptions and keywords they used were not exactly spot-on on what I'm looking for. I'm going to check out "Hustle & Flow" and "The Fighter" anyway.
Basically, here are a few things I'd like in the movie:
- an oppressive feel, especially of a run-down neighborhood, working class life
- no help from the system and the cops are just another gang
- strong language
- sense of lurking danger
- feeling lost
- constant stress as life is always trying to screw you over
- human integrity amidst all this and a glimmer of hope
- preferably from a youth's point of view
- scenes like thrashing your apartment, family members yelling at each other, shoving and brandishing guns, breaking down and crying in the bathroom, etc.
BUT
- nothing too violent or heavy or depressing please (no killing innocent children, gruesome torture scenes, becoming paralyzed for life, etc., and especially definitely not 'violence for fun')
Movies with a somewhat similar feel include Training Day and Infernal Affairs (the original Hong Kong version of The Departed). Eastern Promises is somewhat similar, but a bit too 'organized', realistic and heavy. All the street dance movies are way too fluffy.
So, any thoughts?
If nothing matches, something with realistic youth angst with great acting that in the end doesn't get smoothed over by the loving hands of society/parents/mentor will be ok too.
I hope someone knows what I'm talking about
Thanks in advance!
