idk why people are saying the app's phenomenon is due to a hivemind mentality. so many people in their 20s now grew up on pokemon, and pokemon itself still has an enormous fanbase. mixing that with an easily accessible mobile app makes for HUGE popularity. i don't get how people think they're somehow "above" others for not playing the game - i honestly thought we left hipsters back in 2013.

I don't think I'm above anyone for not playing. It did kind of seem to explode out of nowhere, though. I admit that I never really was into Pokemon when it first was a thing... it kind of passed me by.

just putting it out there that if i was singling you out i would have @'d you. this is more just me reacting to what i've seen on facebook and news articles - people who are shunning others for using the app on their high horse. your post seems fine to me tho.

any harm the app has "caused" i blame on the actual people for lacking common sense. many people i know with social anxiety disorder and depression are having this app do wonders for their lives - where are the reports on that? hell, even people who are physically disabled are able to report this and have their accounts get changed so more pokemon will appear in their immediate surroundings. idk, knee-jerk reactions to technological innovations just seem off-putting to me.

FOR FUCKIN' REAL. preach

I don't care how popular the app is I was going to play it either way because I grew up with pokemon. All I've seen that's bad about the game doesn't really have anything to do with the game itself but assholes who harass people for playing it. The last few times I've gone to the park I've witnessed and dealt with harassment from people who think it's stupid to play. There was one guy screaming about people playing at cops had to be called to calm him down. People need to get off their high horses tbh. I even saw on the subreddit today that a guy got arrested because he was going to go out and shoot pokemon go players (not sure if it was a real gun or just a paint ball gun? but still) It's a game. Not playing it doesn't make someone a magical special maturity unicorn god damn

Like, omg I never go on walks, I never talk to people I don't know, now I've walked like 30 miles and I go to the park with my friends and we play and I talk to people and everyone's so friendly and welcoming and nice except for the people who randomly like to run up and start screaming about how "pokemon sucks!!!!" literally out of nowhere. Like how about next time you're at home playing COD I jump in through your window and screech "COD sucks!!!" just because I don't play it or care about it. people suck. people hating things just because its "trendy" to hate things suck

I deleted the app once I found out there are only 3 ghost pokemon total as of right now. No words.

You know stragedy wise team instinct has the upper hand. Zapdos is a electric/flying type and electric owns flyers and you know Articuno and Moltres are BOTH flying types. Plus Fire and ice dont really affect Electric when it comes to attack damaged... So Honestly, whoever picked Mystic and Valor kinda suck at thinking on their feet...

Don't worry about title, it's clickbait.

I very much agree with her pokemon go philosophy. She and I have reasonably similar goals in it.

ice is super effective against flying but articuno and moltres are only good against one other bird (articuno is good against zapdos and moltres is good against articuno) but zapdos is good against both so that's the tea

so far, my beefiest pokemon include:

arcanine
vaporeon
primape
pinsir
magmar
parasect
arbok
kadabra
pigeot
and golbat

i'm level 15, have walked 20 km, and registered 51 pokemon in the pokedex.

arcanine has the highest cp at 1131. he spearheads gym battles pretty effectively, with vaporeon providing strong coverage while the rest serve as general fodder.

battles are too easy. the gym's pokemon start out with 2 initial attacks. after that, you just follow a dodge/attack tempo.

i hope they make battles less automated.

i strongly considered team instinct, but went with mystic. so far, the choice in teams has been inconsequential outside of the power dynamics that players create. valor dominates in my area.

they may give players access to legendary birds in a way similar to the vanilla games: you get first dibs on a pokemon depending on what color you chose, but still have access to pokemon that don't correspond to your choice. i think this would be the best decision for business, but there's no telling what direction this sister company will take.

agreed. it's not 'groupthink' so much as the fact that the business model behind pokemon is genius. it allows players to customize their experience, choose from a growing number of gameplay options, and compete with other players. you can mobilize a pokemon team of your own design. you can focus on pokemon you like out of a pool of a fantastic variety of creatures. then, you can share your experiences and continually sharpen your competitive tools. overall, pokemon has always had the ingredients for successful, appealing game design. it is no coincidence that pokemon go, as the realest incarnation of satoshi tajiri's dream of catching creatures, has taken so many people by storm. to be frank, i'm glad it's seen so much popularity because america needs to find some common ground and get of its ass.

If people are negative about Pokemon Go, I think it's because it's one more overhyped fad in a long line of overhyped fads.

Back 10-15 years ago, there was a dance craze thing that was supposed to get America moving and solve obesity. I forget the name, but the one where foot pads light up and you step on them. (ETA: Dance Dance Revolution)

A few years after that, Wii was supposed to get America moving and solve obesity.

Now, Pokemon Go is supposed to get America moving and solve obesity.

Yeah, right.

Personally, I don't see any problem with playing Pokemon Go. I haven't bothered playing it myself. I don't even have a smart phone; just a dumb one. I'm 60 years old and not into pursuing cutting edge tech. But I was driving by the local park this evening after picking up some Chinese take-out for a late dinner, and I wondered why people were standing around in the park in small groups in the dark, staring at their phones. Then I remembered about Pokemon Go and I was kind of tickled to see it going on right there in front of me.

But still, it's just one more overhyped fad. The Pokemon Go fad will eventually pass, and something even newer and better will come along in another year or two, and it too will supposedly get America moving and solve obesity. Because that's how we solve obesity in America--with games and toys. And meantime Americans keep getting fatter and fatter. :)

Seriously: If people want to get physically fit, then they should put down the phone and the toys and get a gym membership. And then visit the gym and work up a good sweat a couple times a week for the rest of their life. That's how it's done in real life. No games, no strolling around the city staring at your phone. Just good, honest sweat on a regular basis. Video games are good for downtime; I still play World of Warcraft on a daily basis for fun at dinnertime. But don't confuse computer or video games with a real workout. It's just doesn't work that way.

I'm not trying to be cynical or mean here. I'm just saying: Be realistic in your expectations of the game. The Pokemon Go fad will pass in a matter of a few weeks or months at most, and people will still be fat. If people really want to get in shape, they need a gym membership, not another video game.

That makes sense and I would absolutely agree with you...if the primary purpose and appeal of Pokemon Go was weight loss. Rather, I believe the extra activity is just an often mentioned side benefit. Speaking from both personal experience and observation, it's primarily the social and nostalgia factors that seem to be causing people to gravitate to this game. It makes sense then, that the people who did not experience the original pokemon craze and who do not have access to the hype through their friends and family, have a harder time seeing what the big deal is. The answer is honestly as simple as "millions of people around the world are now able to live out some of their childhood dreams all thanks to advances in mobile technology that have mostly occurred in the last decade". One could argue that it's the sort of innocent fun that many people were needing considering the onslaught of negativity and divisiveness that the news has pretty much become.

Regarding longevity, at the moment I do not believe the game has enough content to keep people engaged for longer than a couple of months. Niantic is reported to be working on some special events (such as legendaries which are rumored to be taking the form of Anomalies from Ingress), trading, individual trainer battles, as well as eventually adding newer generations of pokemon. I'm curious to see how Niantic will maintain people's interest going forward.

i personally think the extent of people's aggresiveness towards people who use the app is rooted in ableism, but that's another story. yes it is an overhyped fad, but i don't think it became an overhyped fad purely out of groupthink as the formula for the app DOES make for a lot of success by appealing to a substantial amount of the population's interests.

I never actually mentioned obesity in the post you replied to. I mentioned people with depression and SAD who are finding motivation to go outside, engage with others, and overcome their personal struggles related to their mental health through this app. I don't think this app is a cure-all for mental illness or obesity and anyone who does is pegging too much on an APP, but people who are writing and reposting sensationalized news articles on all the "damage" the app is causing are ignoring the personal improvements the app is setting in motion as well.

Personally, as someone who stays active and tries to keep his body looking hot, the app is very easy to integrate into my exercise. Run from my house to a local park, work out at the park, enjoy the scenery and catch some Pokemon and then run back home. So it does add flair to my exercise.

I'm not trying to be cynical or mean here. I'm just saying: Be realistic in your expectations of the game. Like I said, I never actually mentioned obesity lmfao
